    Hi

I'm running both Vista and 7 on two separate laptops.

I can't decide which codec pack I should stick with.

I've always used K-Lite and it has never been a problem for me on Vista and XP.

My new laptop running Windows 7 I has CCCP installed due to a friends recommendation.

I can't tell the difference between the two codec packs. The only major difference that I can tell is that K-Lite loads videos much faster than CCCP.

Are there any advantages of having one codec pack over the other?
Any other suggestions are welcome as well :)

    Thanks
    Jimmy

For me, CCCP runs a bit faster and covers more formats than K-Lite. But you'll probably hear either being preferred by different users. IMO it doesn't really matter as long as you can run what you need.

Why have a codec pak at all? Doesn't VLC media player handle just about everything without the need for a codec pak?

I used VLC before and I wasn't really happy with the over-all quality of the player and not all the files I played with it worked. Then again this was a few years ago. Soon after I ditched VLC I used K-Lite and it worked pretty well for me. Only gripe I had was having to configure a few things with K-Lite.

But recently I've been told by a friend that CCCP is a better choice over K-Lite.

K-lite...CCCP...they all do the same thing. Personally, Ive been using K-lite just cause I always have and Media Player Classic works pretty damn well too!

Give KMPlayer a try, I prefer it over VLC. Slick interface too. But if you insist on MPC + a codec pack, I'd say CCCP is the better choice.

Klite + MPC-HC + HW HD Acceleration = what I always end up coming back to. VLC doesn't work properly on my hardware yet, but they're fixing that as I type this. And I've honestly never needed to try CCCP, so IDK much about that pack.

Neither. I use MPC-HC (not the version bundled in K-Lite, though), ffdshow (known as ffdshow-tryouts at Sourceforge) and Haali Media Splitter. No problems so far.

I've been using K-lite for quite a while now, with no complaints. It's especially convenient that it comes with my favorite player. ;)

Why are some people so against the notion of using a codec pack? Personally I thought VLC was really not intuitive at all.

I have used CCCP in the past with very good results, but since I was told the latest K-lite pack has better cpu and gpu usage I went back to that. It works very nicely on my Vaio TT with the intel 4500 HD gpu and SU9300 cpu, yet to find a video to stutter or not play.

Instead of installing multiple codec packs, download a portable version of VLC or MPC-HC.
