Didn't 7 have some sort of virtual XP thingy that supposedly works very well? You could maybe run the non-7 supported programs (a media player + codecs) via that.

I update Flash, use K-Lite Codecs and VLC on W7. It seems to works fine with video and streams watching so far.

    cheers ...

I use K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, it plays everything you throw it at it including Real Media and Quick Time, FLV, 3GP, etc....

    K-Lite is 90% bloat.

All you need is ffdshow, Haali splitter and MPC-HC.

Though I would suggest this as it looks quite interesting ;)

    http://labs.divx.com/mkvwin7preview

Gives WMP (and W7 itself) native .MKV DivX support

As WMP already supports .MOV and DivX .AVI isn't doing to bad really!

I figured most people would use GOM or VLC.

WMP 12 also supports native h.264 decoding

Oops should have remembered that one - especially as I can play downloaded HD trailers from Apple in WMP ;)

Here is the BEST codec pack I tried for Win7. The installer and uninstaller doesn't screw up your system. Everything is clean.

It's available in 32 and 64-bit. It also allows you to enable Windows Media Player 12 64-bit for you to use 64-bit codecs and enjoy reduce CPU load and slight increase battery life (depends on the video). Also gives thumbnail preview on all video formats even Flash FLV for Windows 7 32 and 64-bit.

You can install both 32-bit and 64-bit codec on your WIn7 64-bit without any conflicts.
It's called Shark007. It's not very well known as it's fairly new... about release soon after Vista, if I am not mistaken.

    32-bit: http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html
    64-bit: http://shark007.net/x64components.html

Oh and it unlike K-lite when I tried on my Win7 RC and Vista. It doesn't screw up the internal codecs of the OS (32 and 64-bit DVD encoder and Xvid codec in the case of Win7)

Just uninstall all the previous codec pack.

CCCP is a nice, compact codec package.

All of these are great codecs for Windows 7 especially the CCCP.I have tried all of the codecs listed here and none of them make the radio in Fallout3 play clearly, in fact ffdshow makes it a lot worse. So if anyone has that issue and is reading this thread keep that in mind.

re: CCCP. As of mid-2008, the pack registered properly with Vista and WMP11/12. It should then work fine on Win7.

The fallout3 problem may not be a codec problem, it could be a sound card driver. Card drivers are not the same thing as a codec set.

I find that the built in codec for H.264 better than anything from Klite and CCCP. I didn't install any codec at all because Windows Media Player plays everything I have.

I had to install a codec pack to play my FLV files.... Shark's is great and I highly recommend it.

Define not clearly? Is it the overall sound or just the game music?
What is your sound card? It could also be a latency issue with your system.

Please specify the version of Windows 7.. 32 or 64-bit, else you are not helpful. Else it's like someone says "I have a certain codec pack and it works fine under a certain operating system", not very helpful :/

There's absolutely no point to 64 bit codecs as of yet, so why bother?

CCCP and the Shark007 ones are definitely your best bet if you want an all in one package.

    There is!
On my laptop playing the same movies with the same codec pack available in 32-bit and 64-bit, with the same player (just 32-bit version), I saw an increase in battery life increase of about 35min on my 9-cell battery. Of course it all depends on the codec and video, and it's not a professional test, but i saw the difference. Also, CPU usage is lower. 1080p HD movies plays better as well.

There is always an advantage going 64-bit, even web browsers presented that
    http://www.dailytech.com/Mozilla+Ma...4Bit+Browser+With+Firefox+36/article15607.htm

The thing is the 64-bit CPU is more then just increase RAM support, and increase in instruction length, but also new operation codes to do things faster.

And again, saying such a thing is like going "My computer is too fast for me, let me slow it down", it's like turning off the turbo button on the old 86 computers... did anyone even removed turbo other then those few that ran clock sensitive applications? I don't think so.

95% of the time 32bit codecs will work on Windows 7 64bit OS.
It's the same principle as "can I run 32bit OS on 64bit and 32bit compatible processor."

I know that. I already mentioned this. But thumbnail preview and 64-bit application that uses codecs for video/audio won't work.

That's weird, considering how early the 64 bit versions of ffdshow and VSfilter are and its own developers suggesting use of the 32 bit release the last I saw.

The complete lack of and/or broken/immature AviSynth and Haali splitter 64 bit releases is more of an issue for me. :(

It's a confirmed Codec problem with Windows 7, some people even experience the problem with Vista, but that could be drivers. By not clear I mean incredibly choppy and not audible at all. It is a confirmed glitch and so far there is only a solution for ALchemy users. But FFD show is known to make it much worse or even create the problem for people who have never had it before.

No idea why you'd have problems with Fallout 3 and ffdshow unless you're using an ancient version or you've personally borked it in some way. The default installed config has fallout3.exe blacklisted so it doesn't even use ffdshow.
