With Bittorrent out of the question, and Ruckus's content being "patchy" at best, where is a good source I can get my music from?

From the CD shops, nearer to you?? Or amazon may be?
*Btw, I don't think such questions/discussions are allowed in NBR... I don't know, but AFAIK its not encouraged here..*

Are you looking for free music? or are you looking to purchase it?
-
I'm just looking for a reasonable source for music.

I second iTunes.
-
Also take a look at Amazon's online music store-Amazon MP3.
-
I have really enjoyed Amazon MP3's. If you are looking for exclusively free music, check out their specials page( http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=amb_lin..._rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=435776801&pf_rd_i=163856011)
There is new free songs every Tuesday and always a bunch available. I have found some great music this way.
Also look at music.download.com they have tons of free MP3's. Zune marketplace is ok for some music, but many of the songs have drm. They offer free tunes every week as well.

Pandora might prove nice for you. Not for download, but free listening.
-
I second Pandora.
-
Pandora.com Best internet radio EVER.
-
I have never seen an issue with ruckus's content. Have you looked lately? They even upped the bitrate to 192.
-
i use imeem, not for downloading though
-
Spiralfrog.com has 'free' music too. You need to renew your membership monthly to listen to it though.
-
Try jamendo.com
its all free music distributed under a creative commons license, so it won't be music you've necessarily heard before but some of it is definitely worth a listen. -
Emusic has lots of DRM-free music from smaller labels. Amazon has a good selection from the majors. Ruckus isn't bad for selection, but only works with a limited number of players, so I don't use it (OK, I understand my iPod not working with Ruckus, but my wife's Zune, using WMA files, can't use Rukus either).
-
I also suggest Amazon.
Pandora is also great, but if your campus sets a bandwidth limit, you'll be eating that up very quickly. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
no bandwidth limits here, pandora ftw
-
wow lucky. My campus has a 500mb/week limit. An afternoon of music + youtube can quickly eat that up.
