Does anyone know of a command line that could be used to mute/unmute the audio in Vista or Win7? Maybe even a shell command?

Due to some driver changes on my Vaio the utility for setting the functionality of one of my auxillary buttons no longer works. That utility allowed me to set the function of the button to mute/unmute. Even though the utility no longer works I am able to patch the registry for it to run an app when the button is pressed. So I thought if there was some command line I could use, I could write a little batch file to do the toggle.

    Thoughts?

look at nircmd from nirsoft.net. I believe that in that handy little utility there are volume control and mute functions.

PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is EXACTLY what I was looking for. The cool thing is it even has a command that toggles between the two modes. +rep

Do have a look at everything that nircmd can do. It's quite the piece of software. Nir Softer is very open to suggestions for adding functionality as well. The examples on the web page are only examples. Refer to the help file.

I keep nircmd.exe in my /windows/system32 directory so that it is easily available in the standard system path.

I have a pile of custom shortcuts (.lnk) that call various functions from nircmd.exe. It's easy.

Funny thing is I was on their website earlier today to look at their Explorer Shell Viewer app. Thanks again for the tip. I already have it implemented and my switch button is working like it used to!

Fn + F2 does the mute/unmute. Are you sure it is not working?

It does work. I was just used to having the S button do that. A bit easier to do it quickly when the phone rings with a single button. Using nircmd works like a champ. The only issue I had was that when I tried to put "nircmd mutesysvolume 2" into the registry key it didn't appear to pass the parameters. So I created a batch file. Works great now!
