I was playing GTAIV and after i returned to Windows, I started Windows Live Messenger then it told me ".../common files / messenger folder" is corrupt, i said well you can expect everything from the crappy products from windows live, but then i ran cc cleaner to check what is wrong and it told me ".../common files / cc cleaner " is corrupt.

i was shocked, the entire common files DIR in program files x86 is corrupt.

i forced cc cleaner to run and cleaned the registry, i don't have corrupt messages anymore but the whole registry for x86 was deleted, so i have to reinstall all the programs that require that common files registry entry to run.

anyone know what is the cause or have seen such thing???

    more info:
drivers installed in previous days: none
    programs: java of sun mycrosystems.
    programs/drivers uninstalled: none.
    usage: normal.
    viruses and spyware: checkd, none.

Tried system restore, it does not work, needs that i check disc for errors but i cant check disc for errors, it says it cannot be checked while in use and that i have to schedule a check and i do that but after rebooting the machine the disk check never occurs.

I have disconnected the machine from the net as I am afraid it gets compromised or smth if this was a virus, I am thinking of the recovery partition as a solution but I'm waiting for replies here maybe it can be solved.

have you tried booting from the Vista CD, going to Vista RE, and running command prompt there and then trying to run the disk check?

Same thing happened to me when I was using vista, I had to press F8 when the computer posts and go to the Vista repair option, and from in there go to command prompt and do a chkdsk the oldschool way. chkdsk /y or whatever floats your boat. It shouldn't be mounted since it's in the Windows recovery thing. Be patient though, when I did it this way mine took an hour :)

It's quite possible that your hard drive is beginning to fail, and that the area(s) on the drive where these files are saved has been growing bad sectors.

If you cannot run chkdsk, try downloading and running the hdd diagnostic utility from the website of the company that manufactured your hard drive.

If you cannot boot at this point, try using a LiveCD, either some linux variant or the Ultimate Boot CD (which contains disk diagnostics you can run from the CD).

I haven't had the symptoms of a failing disk show up in the common files area, but I have had the boot files get corrupted the last two times my hdd began to fail.

i can boot but i get this message "C:\users\erik\appdata\local\microsoft\windows is corrupt and unreadable." when i try to run certain programs like internet explorer, msn messenger, aim etc. the programs still run fine though but then when i try to run fraps it says C:\fraps\fraps.exe the file or directory is corrupt and unreadable"and will not launch. also when i try to install new stuff i get the message E:\setup\setup_W64.exe is corrupt and unreadable."

You really should run a hdd diagnostic first to find out if your hdd is eating itself up - there's no point in trying to reconstruct an installation on a hdd that's slowly dying (I should know, I've suckered myself into doing it several times now). Even if you get it repaired, if the hdd's dying it will corrupt something else in very short order.

In that case you're going to have to go with something like a LiveCD or the Ultimate Boot CD (which has several disk diagnostics in the standard download) - either of those will boot directly from CD, and will set up in memory without having to touch the hdd.
