There are many risks to downloading and I do not promote it.
I downloaded a file that was about 1gig using uTorrent last night. Afterwards my computer was being REALLY slow. I tried restarting. I did a virus scan as well. My computer computer is usually lighting fast, but after my download last night, it has not been the same. This was not my first time downloading something using uTorrent on this laptop.
Thinking about backing up all of my data and doing a fresh restore. Would going back to a restore point before yesterday work as well?
Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks in advance.

Anything show up in the event logs?
-
I am running Vista. I have never used the Event Viewer, but I just Google'ed it.
What should I be looking for? If I discover something that may be causing my computer to slow down, how do I fix it?
Thank you. -
Review your uTorrent settings; one possibility is to set the value of "net.bind_ip" to your IP address. Restart afterward and see

What does this do? Does this uTorrent setting affect my computer even when uTorrent isnt running?
I rarely use uTorrent, so its never on or running in the background. -
Downloading does not infect a computer, running a malicious file will. You can download viruses to your computer, they just don't execute by themselves, at least not directly by uTorrent.
No. -
Got me about what "this" does - this is a known issue with uTorent for along time and with Vista. That is the currently work-around.
2nd part question = no, as Stewie mentioned above

there is nothing wrong with "downloading" in general. the blockbuster movie (or whatever) that you downloaded with the filename ending with .exe was actually a virus.
-
The file I downloaded was not an .exe file. I also checked the reviews and comments on the file and they were all positive. 200+ positive comments and 99 +'s.

It sounds like hard disk drive problem to me.
The fact that this happened just after you installed µTorrent might only be coincidental. -
Check the task manager and see if there are any suspicious or misbehaving processes that takes up lot of CPU time.
As already mentioned above, downloading a file alone will not infect or slow down your computer. -
That's a very good suggestion; also, check on the commit charge for any process that seems to be acting up, because your symptoms could also be caused by a misbehaving app (such as, for example, the utorrent client) with a memory leak.

You didn't somehow put your laptop into Power Saver mode did you?
-
It is not in power saving mode. I did a system restore and picked a date earlier last week. Everything seems to be in original working order. I am doing virus scan/disc cleanup/and defrag at the moment.

try Defragmenting also once.

what are the specs of your computer in the first place?
