I usually leave my computer in sleep mode right before I go to sleep. For some reason I couldn't sleep that night, then I saw a light my computer had turned on by itself. My question is...Is the computer running a scheduled update(maintenance) or is something wrong with my computer.

Either scheduled maintenance, or some device that has permission to wake the system sent a wake signal, for example, a mouse, or perhaps even the ethernet adapter.

Yes if you have any disk defragment or virus scan scheduled for midnight or so forth. Could also be a torrent program that has scheduled seeding times.

My old Acer Ferrari5000 used to turn itself on when it was shut off unpluged in my bag... this caused repair #4.

Go to the Device Manager and go under properties of all devices (Mainly Ethernet/Wireless/Modem/Blutooth) , make sure that none of the devices are allowed to Wake the computer, that may stop it.

Also, when its on, and you open it, is there any specific programs or screens running?

Nothings set to wake and I don't remember if it went back to sleep by itself or not. I'm pretty sure it was just some scheduled maintenance. Thanks everyone.

Good, my computer has actually done this twice in the year that I've had it. I might try a few of the suggestions above.

Now I can stop thinking ghosts roam my study :p
