No, this isn't a shameless plug, I'm in no way affiliated with the following link. http://www.diefer.de/indexe.html

The topic has come up as to how to control the clock speed of your CPU. In general, clock speeds will decline when a laptop using SpeedStep is unplugged. This is to save power. At the same time, your laptop should go back to full speed when plugged in...most times.

SpeedSwitch XP is a small utility that replaces the power scheme settings on laptops. It allows the user to manually control what speed their CPU is operating at. I had a notebook (Vaio XG-500) in which the SpeedStep was not operating correctly no matter what my power settings were. I used this application and have been sastisfied. Very easy to use and effective.

Hope it helps...please review the site and documentation before using it on your machine!!!!

yeah, that's a nice little app. the same guy has an application that allows you to tweak the fan speed for Inspiron notebooks...but beware, if Dell finds out you've been messing with such things and your notebook breaks down the warranty will be voided [8)]

I may not if it will void my 3yr complete care warranty

Using speedswitch is fine. What Abaxter was talking about is a seperate program by the same author that allows you to control the fans inside the laptop. Speedswitch won't void your warranty. The fan program would if something were to go wrong with the fans.

Could i use this on a laptop that doesn't have any sort of prossesor speed switching program/feature on it? like if I'm watching a movie and I don't need all 3.2 Ghz (I'm still planning for my laptop, im thinking sager, dell or ibuypower/cyberpowerinc) I could tone it down to about 1 ghz for watching a movie or typing (or however low it will go and not affect performance much) and save a lot of battery life?

Although I haven't needed to use it in a while, from what I can remember there should be a green and black icon in the program bar. If you right click on that icon, you should see options like Max Performance, Max Battery, and Dynamic Switching. Max performance should give you the highest CPU speed, Max Battery should give you the lowest, and Dynamic Switching should change your CPU speed according to CPU load. As I mentioned in the original post, please read the documentation and review the website. There are some compatibility issues with some machine and as was pointed out earlier, using it could possibly void your warranty if it somehow damages your machine.
