WinAVI converts MKV files, but not not the others you mentioned.

AviDemux. Matroska and MKV are simply containers and you can probably just re-mux them (direct stream copy) them into AVI. Of course that depends on the codec(s) used in the MKV.

I'm just curious, why convert the files to AVI? The AVI container is very old and lacks almost all the features of modern containers such as MKV, MP4, M4V, and others.
Is there a particular device you are using that only supports avi? -
Many DVD players and TVs allow only AVI or MP4 containers.

Another good one (albeit limited in the size output of the video it generates) is pspvc ... might give that one a try. It's freeware.

I know Any DVD converter converts mkv files. It has a free edition and is what I use and it's never faulted me yet. It also lets you burn straight to DVD.
