About two weeks ago I got an "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" error when I started my other computer up. I read some stuff about fixing it and it worked. I did a CHKDSK /P and FIXBOOT from the recovery console. It worked well, but the problem eventually came back.

I looked on the recovery console and it says that the partion's file system is "Unknown".

I'm doing a CHKDSK /P again but it's going incredibly slow. I started it on Saturday afternoon and it has only gotten to 27%. It got to 25% that day but it stopped. It has been crawling ever since. I'm getting mad because at this rate it could take weeks.

I would reformat the drive but I've got a ton of music and videos on the drive that I haven't backed up yet (stupid me). Right now I'm just hoping for a way to either repair the file system or get files off of the drive.

If you know of a way to resolve this problem, please help me. I'm up for trying anything, at this point. As long as I can get my music and videos, I'm fine with losing everything else.

    Thanks.

this could be due to various things.
    1. Bad Ram. You could have a damaged ram module. Try swapping out sticks and see if that does anything. When ram goes, it screws up everything since everything depends on it.
2.Motherboard problems. The mobo could be damaged and is not communicating with things right. (or something else to do with it)
3.Dying Harddrive. Try taking out the harddrive and install it on a working computer, either as the main drive or as a slave drive and see if it works. If it does work just fine, then its one of the above mentioned problems.

a few years back i had a similar problem when it said that there were ntfs.sys problems (some error i can't remember). and the tech that fixed it initially diagnosed to a damaged mobo (from power surge(s)) and/or the ram. After he replaced the mobo, and we got it back, it still crashed. I tryed messing with the ram and found that one of the sticks was bad and was causing the problems.

Good luck trying to fix it.

I had the same problem with my mother-in-laws desktop it was an hp and it had a unmountable boot volume 3 times. I would recommend that you buy a new hard drive for it, I would recommend newegg.com and the Hitachi Travelstar 7200 rpm drive 80 gig is probably the most cost-efficient at about $169 or so. I am not sure how you would do it with a notebook, but you should be able to hook up your old hard drive and the only problem being with the boot sector, you should be able to grab your files off your old hard drive, then throw the pos away!. Once a file system gets corrupted it just seems to reoccur every few months or even weeks.

    Take care,

    Matt

You might want to pick up a external case as a way to get your old data off. If you send it in for warranty repair get the data off first as they will likely wipe the drive. Good Luck.
