it's actually released (and I get it for free since I bought a laptop with Vista (64 bit home premium) recently), just enter that new key and keep using it without re-installing?

No, you still have to install it over Vista.

    You could dual boot...

I'm dual booting on my laptop.

No, I mean install Win 7 right now over Vista, then when it's actually released, just enter the new key and keep using Win 7 without reinstalling it.

Well are you installing a RC or RTM over your Vista now? If it's an RTM(release to manufacturer) obtained via MSDNAA or otherwise, then you have no need to upgrade at all since an RTM is essentially the same as a retail version(minus the name).

If it's an RC(release candidate), then no, you can't upgrade a RC to a retail version.

Sorry I forgot to specify, but yea I was talking about the RC that Microsoft was giving out for free for a year, but looks like they stopped that now.

Yeah RCs can't be turned into retail versions.

Btw why is this in the gaming section?

People need to get sections right, I see a lot of crud in the wrong places.

As for upgrading, RTM or not, you'll want to capitalize on your free Windows 7 upgrade (I hope you registered your key and already have an order up) as it may carry unexpected upgrades.

IMO it's always better to have the full retail build then a RTM build. IMO.

Except it's the EXACT SAME THING. You probably missed the thread where we repeated this line 20 times though.
