I can't believe that I didn't know this until a few days ago!?!? Pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc in Vista/7 works the same as Ctrl+Alt+Del does in XP and versions of Windows.
It's very handy when your system freezes and you need to kill one or more Apps. Definitely a better choice than holding down the power button and doing a hard reboot without a proper shutdown....
It may be old news to most of you, but somehow I missed this memo!?![]()

Ctril + Alt + Del = Task Manager in Windows 7 -
It is true what they say, no matter how much you think you know about computers, you learn something new everyday.
-
haha same here, i just discovered this last week when a friend told me about it

ctrl-shift-esc has worked since NT4, while ctrl-alt-del has always given more options (hit ctrl-alt-del and space to lock computer fast).
This changed a bit with XP, not all ctrl-alt-del configurations worked similarly anymore but ctrl-shift-esc has always been same. -

You can also right click on the Taskbar and select "Task Manager" to directly start the Task Manager. Handy when you don't want to use the 3 finger salute (Ctrl+Alt+Del) or the 3 key shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
Works in 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008 & 7.

presumably Alt-Tab still does what it does too...

Yeah, I've been using Ctrl-Shift-Esc for 2 and a half years ever since I started using Vista, because I hated having to go through the option screen before being able to access my Task Manager. It's easier to press too because you only need one hand.
Yay you just learned something new today! -
I've always been using Ctrl + Shift + Esc for Task Manager. In Professional/Business editions of Windows, Ctrl + Alt + Del brings up a screen with several different options to choose from, which I never used. Far simpler to directly ue Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
Plus, there's the advantage of only needing one hand - my other hand can be on the mouse. -
The other trick was used already back in the days when there was no Win-key in the keyboards
Some people still like to disable those, or rip them off the keyboard alltogether.

This is the way i normally go to the taskman... Rightclicking taskbar > Start Task Manager... Still, thanks for telling me about ctrl+shift+esc, i can't believe i didn't knew that!
Ctrl+Shift+Esc = Task Manager in Vista (and Win7)!
