I have my power options set so my laptop enters standby first, and then hibernate later; if I leave it long enough.

For some reason it won't enter from standby into hibernate mode, unless I manually go into control panel > power options before I finish my windows session, and change the time for hibernate. Then it'll do it fine!

XP Pro, all updates installed. Only thing I think that could have an effect is perfectdisc and bootvis

Curious bit is this has only started recently. I've been using the laptop fine for 3 months since I bought it, and with bootvis and perfectdisc.

No problems with standby, or instant hibernate via bootvis. Only a problem if it goes from standy>hibernate by itself without me changing the time slightly. Then it just stays on the desktop and goes into a cycle of standby>hibernate fail>desktop>standby etc etc (I deliberately shortened times just to confirm what prob was)

Sorry man I gave up on hibernate long time ago. I don't really think the Windows OS implementation of it is good, or even adequate. The whole idea sucks to begin with: "OK we'll just use up a huge portion of your hard drive to back up the state you were in right before you hibernated, which probably will take nearly as long as a restart but will leave you with less memory and possibly undead services."

You can look for an update from MS, by which I mean you should look at updates you've downloaded regarding the hibernate issue. MS hotfixes and patches have a wonderful tendency to make things a lot worse.

Meanwhile, is there some reason standby alone is not good enough?

    Thanks anyway :)

I can still hibernate... just need to remember to +/- 5min to the settings  Hibernate only kicks in if I'm away more than half the day though. I read that hibernate is better for extended periods than standby

Oh, with bootvis, my standby resumes are pretty much instantaneous, whereas hibernation is about 20sec. Roughly a third of my startup time. What can I say? The difference matters to me :p
