I couldn't find much about this anywhere else so I thought I'd just ask...
Is there any way to find out which programs (and which versions) have multi-threaded designs to take advantage of dual-core processors? It seems like someone would have compiled a list by now since dual-core processors are so popular.
I'm curious if things like Windows Media Encoder 9, DVDShrink, and Paint Shop are multi-threaded. It would be really nice to know which programs to expect a boost from without having to manually compare performance for each program on two different computers.
Here's something else I hope someone might be able to answer... My desktop computer has a 7800GS video card and Athlon XP 2800+ processor. I've always wanted to use the in-game video recording feature in The Sims 2, but none of the decent quality modes work very well (they end up having slow frame rates and being out of sync). The video card is more than capable of handing The Sims 2, so I know it must be the processor that can't keep up with capturing video. I would LOVE to know if a dual-core processor would enable me to finally record in-game videos! You know, without having to wait until my new computer arrives by UPS next week to test it myself.

There's not an all-inclusive list of apps, but some I know of are Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro. Visit the websites of your favorite applications to see if they are multi/hyper-threaded. I believe there is another thread about multi-threaded applications (I'm pretty sure I replied to that one as well as this one).

Here's a small list i found: http://www.denniskarlsson.com/smp/
Most apps are like Firefox and use multithreading to maintain user responsiveness, so the definition might vary a little from what you're looking for. -
That's great, thanks. A little shabby, but better than nothing
