How does one go about removing the custom button that some OEMs (Lenovo in my case) put in IE? I'm not talking favorites or anything, I mean the button actually embedded in the task bar section of every IE window. I've tried to look it up on Google, but couldn't find anything other than guidelines on what OEMs are allowed to do and some things on how to delete favorites or change the window title. Anyone have any ideas?

From IE7> Tools > Manage Add-ons> Enable 0r disable addons > Select "addons that run without permission" and delete / disable it.
-
I see nothing that looks right in either the currently running or runs without permission group. I don't think it's an add-on, I think it is some sort of custom thing that OEMs can use within IE that is built in to the core of the program.

Start -> Run, type in "mmc".
Go to File -> add/remove Snap-in -> Group Policy Object Editor, for Local Machine
Go to Local Computer Policy -> User Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Internet Explorer Maintenance -> Browser User Interface
That should be where you will find your options for changing the title and the logo used. -
where exactly is it?
can you post a screenshot? -
I think it's something linked to the registry. I remember removing some party poker crap off a friend's computer.
Try this link....

humm, i'm not familiar with the new IE, but my guess would be it under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
Under the old IE, there is a string you can add called Backbitmap I think to change your toolbar.
check what you have under there. -
There is no backbitmap key in there. Sneaky OEMs...
-
Humm. Is it an actual button?
check under HKey_Local_machine\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
It could also be under \Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\
Look for a GUID or an Icon key. DONT DELETE ANYTHING BTW!!!!!!
not yet at least. I forgot to add that at the begining. -
Heh, yeah, I know not to delete or modify anything from the registry unless I know exactly what it is.
-
Ok, nothing of interest under Extensions or Toolbar in CURRENT_USER, under LOCAL_MACHINE, extensions has Java Console, something having to do with Office, and something having to do with Windows Messenger, so no go there. Nothing of note under Toolbar in LOCAL_MACHINE either.

Hummm, I'm running out of ideas
Sorry. -
Ahh well. I guess I'll just have to live with this one more bit of pervasive and mildly invasive advertising.

well,,, it's a part of the Google Toolbar...
you might try uninstalling the Google Toolbar....
run a registry cleaner to remove unused google left-overs...
then re-install the toolbar if you need it...
just my 2 cents.
bigozone
BTW it has to be in the Registy somewhere... i'd do a search for google then look around and see what u find -
Um, it is likely not part of google toolbar. It was there long before google. Unless lenovo went to the trouble of installing a sleeper that would only activate once google toolbar was installed, it makes no sense what so ever.
