Does Vista allow me to set this as default ?
I have read that charging up to 80 % helps against battery degradation ?
Does this makes a big difference ?

It can double you battery life or more, Vista does not have this feature it has to be built into your notebook not just software.

As far as I am aware only Lenovo notebooks offer this option.

I had a Samsung netbook that had the option to charge to 80% , so maybe they have notebooks as well.

It is software controlled - and maybe BIOS too - I know my SZ can charge to just 80%.
(or alternatively 100% and 50%)
It can be configured for all batteries or for individual batteries.
Edit:
And personally I only charge to 80% -
How to find out if your notebook offers this option ?
If my notebook doesn't have this option, is there some software that I can install to achieve this ? -

I think you might get software to stop the battery charge at 80% in windows, but without a supporting bios as soon as you shut your notebook down it would continue to charge to 100% , unless you unplugged it.

Ask fellow notebook owners, read the manual.
You cannot manually add it.
My laptop also won't charge past 80% when switched off but plugged in - this part cannot be controlled by software. -
What should I put in google to find such software ?
Cut off battery charge at 80 % level ?
