I'll read that open office or libre office can handle docx.

I have open office on this laptop. I can open and edit docx files but then I go to save, and docx doesn't appear in the possible extensions I can save it as. Open office then warns me that if I don't save as a .odt file there could be problems. Some online tutorials say that it should appear- it doesn't. I choose the closest thing, maybe microsoft word 97, 2000 and then later when I open the file on either the ubuntu based computers in my school's computer lab or on my windows laptop, I sometimes have formatting/spacing/compatibility problems.

But in the descriptions of many free word processing programs, they say they can handle docx files no problem- but from the above there are definitely things that don't make things go as smoothly as if I was using say microsoft office 2013

All jolly good. It was free after all. But I'm still looking for a word processor that avoids any of the above issues, which are very minor but still not ideal

But what word processors will handle docx most smoothly, let me edit and save a file as a docx, and have the least problems when dealing with office 2013 docx files?

docx is not compatible with the non Microsoft world. To be fully compatible, you must use Word or Office. Formatting is an issue outside of this.

If you have a gmail account, just log into google, and you can use google docs, then save as .docx and download it to your computer.
