    Hey all,

I am just wondering. Can I make a DVD image on my HD? I know you can rip and convert the movie (I used FairUse Wizard for that). But that can take pretty long time to do, which sometimes I dont have. Is there a way? Or that is the only way, rip and convert method? I dont want to violate the copyright law.

    TIA.

Yes, violating the copyright law can be tricky. The rules say that for every media you own (VHS, DVD, CD) you can make 1 personal copy, to be used for yourself only. The idea is that you love the original so much you don't want to wear it out.

As far as making an Image on your HD, ripping is the only way at this point to take all the info from the DVD, remove the CSS, and build a readable iso.

Search for past threads about Alcohol 120% and Daemon Tools

P.S. Surely once you convert a film to whatever video format you use that's it? It doesn't make sense to delete it after watching it...just buy a external HD

Well, if it was possible, I could just load the DVD image onto a virtual drive, w/o having going though the rip and convert method, LFC.

    Already tried Alcohol 120%, failed.

    Oh well, thanks anyway guys.

Pretty much any cd/dvd burner program can generate an image. Nero can do it, for one. Should work as long as you don't run into any advanced copy protection like games use.

DVD Shrink will create an ISO image for you (not entirely sure on the legality of it) and then I use Nero DriveImage to mount that ISO so I can watch it. Shrink is pretty fast when it's not actually trying to shrink.

You should be able to run it with Alcohol 120%... if you can create an image, then it'll appear just like a DVD drive to your DVD player...? You may need to go to gamecopyworld.com and see if there's a safedisc hiding program or something similar in case your DVD playing software recognizes Alcohol. Did you try to open up Alcohol's virtual drive with the DVD in it? You have to mount the image from withing Alcohol. I use it all the time for games, I can't see as it'd be any different with a DVD. You just copy the DVD with all the CSS info over to the hard drive in an image, and let your DVD player decode it...

Yes, I did try to open up Alcohol's virtual drive with the DVD in it. It automatic launch PowerDVD, but its showed nothing, nothing at all.

This seems to be a problem with PowerDVD. I ripped a raw DVD with DVD Fab Decrypter, then another disc with DVD shrink and played them both with PowerDVD - same problem, neither one played. You can try playing the image with Media Player Classic. If your laptop had an NVIDIA chipset, I would suggest purchasing their PureVideo DVD decoder. I did that, and not only do the images play perfectly in WMP, they're of excellent visual quality.
