    Hi everyone. I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Windows XP. Whenever I insert a DVD, Dell Media will automatically read my DVD properly. So that's fine. But when I try to manually open the DVD by clicking the DVD icon in My Computer... I get a message saying "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."
    Can someone please help me to fix this minor problem? Thank you!

    I think you need to right click it, and select Auto Play. I believe whatever you choose to be the default action will occur when you click on it.

    This is what I see on my screen when I try to double click the DVD icon. Anyone know how to solve this? Thank you.

    ummm... were you trying to post an image? heres whats wrong though:
    when you click on a doc file youre computer has already been programmed to use Microsoft Word (or openoffice) to open that file... however it seems that you have not selected a default program to open dvds...
    to do this you will have to edit the properties in Dell Media to autoassociate all dvds to Dell so that it will automatically open dvds...
    Since I dont have dell media i can't walk you through the exact steps...
    however if you wanted to use windows media player to automatically start dvds follow these instructions:
    With the dvd in open WMP
    open Tools>Options
    click on the file types tab
    there should be a DVD Video option... Place a checkmark in its box...
    sorry i can't give you more details on the Dell Media configuration but if you try to replicate something like this on Dell Media im sure it will work...
    Hope I helped...

    Bear in mind I had this problem and have solved it BUT ON VISTA so this may or may not work on XP. Make sure you backup your registry first though by at least creating a system restore point and you will be fine. Copy and paste the following into a text document and save as "dvd.reg", making sure you include the '.reg' extension to save as a registry file type entry. Simply double click on the created file and merge the key into the registry:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DVD\shell\play]
    @="&Play"
    "MUIVerb"=hex(2):40,00,25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74, 00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,\
    6f,00,74,00,25,00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65 ,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,\
    00,75,00,6e,00,72,00,65,00,67,00,6d,00,70,00,32,00 ,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,\
    2c,00,2d,00,39,00,39,00,39,00,31,00,00,00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DVD\shell\play\command]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player\\wmplayer.exe\" /prefetch:4 /device :DVD "%L"

    Note that following this you may need to set Windows Media Player as the default program for DVDs by going (this is in Vista so the path is probably different in XP) into Control Panel - Programs - Default Programs - Set Program And Access Defaults - Custom - Chose A Default Media Player - Windows Media Player. When you double click on the DVD icon now, the dvd will begin to play automatically.

    If you are having issues with CDs also, you will need to do the same and integrate the following into the registry:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AudioCD\shell\play]
    "MUIVerb"=hex(2):40,00,25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74, 00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,\
    6f,00,74,00,25,00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65 ,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,\
    00,75,00,6e,00,72,00,65,00,67,00,6d,00,70,00,32,00 ,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,\
    2c,00,2d,00,39,00,39,00,39,00,31,00,00,00
    @="&Play"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AudioCD\shell\play\command]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player\\wmplayer.exe\" /prefetch:3 /device:AudioCD "%L"

    Hope all of this helps and I haven't made any mistakes with the keys!
