Hi there,
I just format my laptop and did a clean install for Windows 7
I downloaded most of the necessary drivers, but i have a problem with transferring data,im trying to copy some files from a dvd but the transfer rate is too slow (2.6 MB/sec)
I'm just wondering if there's a certain driver or something that i need to update to increase the transfer rate
Thanks in advance.

Maybe the latest chipset drivers?
How to install your motherboard chipset drivers -
I'm not sure what that is but i'll read into the link you gave me
But i'd like to point out that i transferred some files from a usb flash drive and it was moving fast,30mb/s...so i'm thinking maybe the problem is with the DVD? or still the chipset? -
Well it depends on several factors such as the DVD drive's read speeds, age and condition of the disk, among other things, but don't expect transfer rates that much higher than say 10MB. If you try other dvds and they are faster, then I would say it's that particular disk. Otherwise, you should see if there is a firmware update available for your particular drive.
Depending on your model that speed may even be normal. -
1. Have you tried a different DVD disk? Could be a problem with the actual disk.
2. You have had a similar installation of Windows 7 before - were there any problems with that? -
Hi,
In case the controller your opticall drive is connected to is running in IDE mode, you should check if DMA is enabled (also check the "current transfer mode".
Installing the most current chipset and storage drivers might help here.

This is likely the culprit for slow transfer rates. Go to the device manager and check DMA is enabled on the ATAPI controllers.
If your optical drive continuously gets too many CRC errors from reading a disc, it will pull back the transfer mode from DMA to a slower rate (PIO). -
Erm ok so now i was trying another dvd as suggested...but it wont even read it now..i insert the dvd and just nothing happens....
i went thru that link, and used CPU-Z but it said the name of the chipset is "Havendale/clarkdale host bridge"..i searched on intel's website and there's nothing with that name.
But then i checked device manage and there's "Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series chipset family".. i searched into 5 series and these are the downloads available for it but im not sure which i should download...
i have no idea what ur talking about lol but i checked under ATAPI controllers in device manager as flipfire suggested and im not sure where to check if DMA is enabled...
This is what i get under ATAPI controllers Device Manager
Sorry im sure im being a pain in the but im not so good with this!
Thanks in advance -
This one: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18859&lang=eng
Doubleclick each ATA Channel entry and check the "Advanced" tab. Most of these should be unoccupied.

Thanks for the reply Michael,
i checked the ATA channels,2 were empty and 2 had DMA enabled...they shudbe enabled or shall i untick that option?
i also downloaded the file you recommended, then restarted and when i was back it was installing driver software and it said that Mata DVD-ram finished installing and Toshiba disk drives..then i was asked to restart again
But the problem now is that the dvd wont read, when i insert a dvd it keeps making some noises with the dvd rotating and all and it keeps blinking then it just stops and the dvd content arent loaded..could that be a coincidence and it's a hardware problem or it still has something to do with formatting the laptop
btw in the notification area i have some icon that says "Optical drive power : ON" and when i right click it i get the options "optical drive autolock" and i can chose enable and then "unlock time settings"
just thought id point that out,im not sure if it has anything to do with the problem i just never had that icon before so figured it might -
Hi,
Should be enabled. What is the current transfer mode reported there? That's an important information.
That's normal.
That sounds like faulty hardware. These Panasonic drives don't have a good reputation.
What you could to to sort out a Windows issue: Grab a bootable CD or DVD (like Ultimate Boot CD, Ubuntu or any other live Linux CD/DVD) and see if you can boot from that disc.
This looks like some piece of additional software. Perhaps from the manufacturer of your laptop.

Ermmm ok i went to check the current transfer mode, and the ATA channels have disappeared!!! there's only "Intel(R) 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller"...
Argh this is frustrating.. -
Hm.
Out of ideas here. The ATA channels are also invisible on my laptop, but I didn't care about that since there is no internal optical drive.
How does your optical drive show up in device manager?
Michael -
Sorry i know this is frustrating but thanks 4 ur patience,u've been of great help
It shows normally i assume... Under "DVD/CDROM DRIVES" there's "mat SH*Ta dvd-ram UJ862AS" -
Can you try copying the files off to a different computer? It could just be that the files are spread across the disc and it's doing a lot of seeking instead of copying.
-
Yes i tried the dvd on another computer and it worked just fine
problem is that now the dvd-rom isnt reading any of the cds,it looks like a hardware problem but it's too uch of a coincidence to happen right after i format the laptop...
