I need to transfer the data from my old desktop to my new laptop--I see various software that says it does it--is any of them any good? If so, which one? Do I really need software? How does one go about the transfer?

I actually never used any software for data transfer (I only used folder sharing for that). You could just connect the laptop and desktop (with wifi or LAN) and just share folders (by default there is a shared document folder) and just copy files from one pc to the shared folder of another pc.
Coz when you are in a network you can work in both computers' shared part as if you were using a single computer (including files and folder sharing, virus checking, etc....).
