and of course, wat software can i use? i hear third party apps are beter, can some recommend a couple? free would be nice but i dont mind spending a bit if its really worth it...please reply!

Pretty big thread on this a little while ago: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=243284

jkdefrag, it's super light.

Defragging is most beneficial to a person who creates a lot of files & deletes a lot of files. If you are a casual user (just browse the internet and rarely download anything) then you may not see much improvement from it... However, it doesn't hurt!
As the above posters mentioned Auslogics & jkdefrag both are free and seem to work well. Personally I prefer JKDefrag between the two. -
Another vote for JKDefrag

Yes, check that out. I voted for JKDefrag GUI.

I've used this for a year myself. I prefer it over others I've tried.

Another JKDefrag user.

A lot of people are recommending 3rd party defrag programs; don't bother unless they can actually give you a good reason. The built-in utility for Windows is fine.

My vote goes, as usual, to Diskeeper 2008 Pro. It works great on my systems without any problems. Make sure you get the latest updated version (build 781) though, if you are trying out the free trial versions from the DK website. Some changes have been made to it after Vista SP1.
