Defragmentation Problem

When I first got my Fujitsu S6210 a few days ago, I ran the disk defragmenter program in windows for a analyze and it said the system was 0% fragmented. I then ran it today and it said it was 15% fragmented. I defragmented it and it still said 15% fragmented. What do I do to get it to 0% once again. The only programs I have installed are Firefox, ZoneAlarm, Sygate, AdAware, Spybot, AVG anti virus, Slick Run and Starup Mechanic. I have since uninstalled ZoneAlarm and Start Up Mechanic. I have these same programs and more installed on my desktop, and it reads 0% fragmentation. Any help is grealy appreciated. Side Note: Total Fragmentation is %15 File Fragmentation is %31

What defragmentation utility are you using? Before I started using DiskKeeper, I just used the Windows defrag app. I was finding that:

- The windows app would say it was defragmenting while it really was just scanning the hard drive only to return an error message that I had to run ChkDsk.
- I could rarely get it to work w/o being in safe mode.

I went to DiskKeeper and everything has been cool since. It even remembers to perform according to its schedule....software that works...cool.

 

Is this program free?
Where can it be found?
If not free, are there any free alternatives?

I too agree that you need a good defrager, the one that comes with XP is made by the same company that makes diskeeper, but it is a downlevel version and is totally crippled as micro$oft didn't want to pay much for it. I use diskeeper and it works better than any defrag program I've ever tried. I have the pro version, which I would recommend as it will defrag the boot area and you can set priorities and it is the fastest. The cost of the pro version is $50 and the home is $30

I don't know of any free ones, not sure I would trust my data to a freeware defrag program[xx(]

You may be able to get it to complete if you stop all the memory resident programs that are running. I notice you have zonealarm and sygate running, why two firewalls? You might want to look at how much cpu time each of the programs are taking up as when you install the other programs you listed (most utility programs)they like to make themselves resident in memory at all times gobbling up all you horsepower. In fact I've seen system where the person is so interested in speeding things up that they install all kinds of utilites to help them do so and the ironic thing is that with all that stuff running to help "speed things up" actually slows them down more[ ]
Did you figure out that thing (malware) your notebook caught the other day?

I had ZoneAlarm and uninstalled in favor of Sygate.
Still do not know about xvshost.exe. I have killed the process and nothing bad happened...

Would it just say a high fragmentation percent because not much data is on the hard drive, so any amount of fragmentation would be a large percent of total used space. I do not know if this is how the number is calculated. Anyone?

also, to help limit the amount of fragmentation you can get Buzzkill, I think this is the name of the program.

As for sygate, that is my personal favorite that I have been using for years, I like how much it can be customized with advanced rules and the simple layout of it.

I too gave up zonealarm for sygate, What I use is Panda software's Platinum 7 for AV and the included firewall is Sygate's. Even if you have a large drive with few files it should defrag to 0%. A problem I've seen with the defragger that comes with windows is that if there are processes running in the background, some of them will restart the defrag process when it gets to a certain point; so you never get down to zero.

Well, I guess I will just let it go, although it does bother me knowing that it is not at zero percent fragmentation.

To me one of the best defragsoftware is O&O defragmenter. You can choose the way it defragments your drive and how to optimize it. If you can get that software anywhere you should give it a try cause its so much better than the standard windows defragmenter en diskkeeper. I always had the idea that those two programs basically did nothing, and compared to O&O they didn't. (In my view [ ])

 

Thanks for the suggestion, but I still want to keep it free.

After buying the laptop, backpack, wireless router (and plan on buying printer, optical mouse, and Office XP) my computer budget is exceeding its limit by a lot.

I ran my virus scanner (AVG) and spybot and adaware and none of them find anything.
