    One piece of software I use (ZtreeWin) heavily depends on the asterisk key on the numpad. I can't figure out how to work around that as my new laptop has no numpad. I've looked at schemes where the Fn key in combination with the 8 key will produce what I want but that does work either.

    Unless I hear of solution I'm considering buying a a separate $20 numpad.

    Wait, shouldn't it be [Shift]+[8]?
    * <- works fine.

    Are you trying to produce a special character? Which one? Have you looked here: How to Type Accents

    Thanks, all. I found the solution over at the ZtreeWIN forum. If there is no num pad (where that special asterisk character is found), use the Alt-Log, Branch option.
