I got a Dell Vostro laptop from Dell, and it came with Windows 7 Professional installed (x64).
I got the serial key from it, removed the HDD and installed an SSD, then installed Windows using a Windows 7 Professional x64 OEM disc
However when I tried to activate it, it says the serial number can't be activated. I rang Microsoft who said the serial has been blocked by Dell and I need to ring them for a new one.
I'm on the phone to Dell now, but I'm still on hold after 30 minutes (great business customer service Dell! 0/10 would recommend) so I thought it would be quicker to make a post and wait for a response here instead.
Will they give me a new key, or should I just forget it and use an activator since I'm fully entitled to this copy of Windows 7 Professional.

Because your system using a special Window 7 key ... You were supposed to do an Upgrade or Clean Install with the OEM Configuration file
But no fret ....
Put back your old drive.
Mount in Windows 10 Install.
Open folder sources
Copy gatherosstate.exe to HDD (Do not run it in /sources of Windows 10 Install)
Run it as admin.
Copy GenuineTicket.xml to a thumbdrive
Put in SDD.
Copy GenuineTicket.xml to %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket
Reboot
Check Activation.Last edited: Jul 29, 2016 -
I guess I'm out of luck if I wiped the hdd already?
I never managed to get through to dell -
Well, you could reinstall Windows 7. Since it seem you have little to lose but time.
No need to install everything, just enough to activate windows 7. No windows update.
Then perform the steps I said before.
Clean install with Windows 10 once you got the ticket generated.
No need to enter a key, just press skip.LooieENG likes this. -

you need to get the right DELL-XRM-MS SLP certificate and inject it into the OS using a command prompt, then activate with that key using the -ipk command
I hope a moderator @toughasnails can guide me whether it is ok for me to post a step by step guide for you or is that against the forum rules as I will be linking the DELL SLP certificate if it is allowedLooieENG and toughasnails like this. -
I don't think we allowed to post that.

Yep I googled around and found that file. You still need the serial to install it though.
Works fine though
