I keep running into these little annoyances with windows 7 sometimes.
This is the second time this happened to me, but basically what happens is i would leave my laptop on and close the lid and the desktop would the last screen i would see, anyway i would come back some time later and i would find some of my desktop shortcut icons missing. Most of them are games but there are some programs like ie or word just disappearing randomly. Its annoying having to put them back again.

Your notebook is going to sleep right?

No i tell it to leave the notebook on when i close the lid, so basically if i have a download going i would close the lid and it would keep going because the notebook is still on, not going to sleep when plugged in.

Oh dang? really?
Sometimes i leave it on overnight with a download and if the laptop faces my bed so the light coming from the screen would be a bit annoying when im trying to fall asleep, thats why i would close the lid, but if that is a bad thing i will have to leave it open from now on. Darn, i wish i knew that earlier because ive been doing that for over a year now. -

You mean the brightness right? Is there a way to turn off the screen with the Fn key?

H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
. I've used my Acer 3680 like that for quite some time now.. about 4-4.5 years now and it's still going great. You just have to make sure it's not getting hot with the lid closed. As for the missing icons, it sounds like Windows Explorer is crashing and recovering while not remembering your settings before a crash. I tell you what.. Restart your computer, and come to your desktop and arrange your icons how you like them, now shutdown not restart again. Now turn it back on and come back to your desktop. Now that you've done that, you've made Windows write your desktop configuration to the settings file that is hidden on your desktop. Now if explorer crashes again, all it should do is maybe re-arrange the icons, and not delete them.
