Bit of a weird problem on my partner's laptop:

The dektop picture has vanished! When I go to the desktop tab in display properties to set it the options for display pictures are blanked out, but the picture does display when shutting down.

I did uninstall one of those supposed spyware detectors last night that was porbably spyware itself... when I did so it said something about ATi tray tools being uninstalled which was weird. I've re-installed the GFX drivers but no joy.

    Any ideas?

It sounds like maybe something to do with Web Content being enabled...

Does your partner's laptop have XP or Vista installed?

Also in Safe Mode, check if you can see the display pictures in the Desktop properties(you wont see the background on your desktop but you should see it in the display pictures)

Have you tried a full scan with both an anti-virus and anti-spyware program(make sure they are updated)?

You might want to consider a system restore or Performing a repair Installation(make sure you backup all important data before doing a repair or restore).

And, what was the name of the spyware detector you uninstalled?

It's XP home. I just tried a system restore and it came up with "restore incomplete, no changes have been made to your computer"

I think the spyware was something like malaware...

I'll try the full scan now.

Did the scan find anything at all and what are the names of anti-spyware/anti-virus scanners you used?

What was the name of the "spyware detector" you uninstaled?

Also, What happens when you "force" a desktop picture(right click on a pic-set as desktop background)?

Scan found some stuff which was cleared up including the adware scanner which i think was "malaware" ?

When you click on "set as desktop background" the click part works ok but the background doesn't change.
