Hello,
Since i installed vista sp1, my laptop does not always shut down properly.
Usually it shuts down within 20 seconds and when it doesn't it just hangs on shutting down message with no disk activity.
All Windows update have been done
All Drivers and Bios where updated thru lenovo thinkvintage update (i have a t61).
Is there a way to diagnose the shutting down process just like the booting (F8, Enable Boot logging).
thanks for any help

did u see if any differences when shutting down with apps still open, or just from a simple desktop with no running apps?
cheers ... -
Nop, 99% of the time i close all apps before shutting down.
also Checked the event log but can't find anything much...
I due suspect readyboost... as i had an issue with sp1 installation hanging on stage 3 until i unloaded the sd card...
Thanks for any help -
i would try to start under safemode and compare the 2 shutdown time and behaviour. Look at ur task manager under both stages (safemode and normal) and see if anything is out of the norm.
if u have a router, i would definitively reset it as well
cheers ... -
something you may also want to try is to change the shutdown timer in the registry. If you look in the Vista tweaks sticky it explains how to change the shutdown timer from 20 sec to around 5. Let us know if you already tried that also. Here is the link http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532

Yep i already had the registry key changed. indeed after 5 -10 seconds of shutting down there's no more HD activity but still hangs or loops on the shutting down message (does not freeze).

ok then I would download CCleaner and repair the registry just in case. I don't see any other reason why its doing that

Check the logs in the Event Viewer.
Start Menu > type "event viewer" in the search box.
