A few weeks ago I went and signed up with ACM to get access to Windows 7, as my school doesn't have an MSNDAA partnership. Last week I had access to four copies of Windows 7, 2 English and 2 French.

Now, I have access to 2 of them - the two I ordered.

What happened to the other 2?

My friend is having the same issue... except for him he has access to NONE of them.

    Anyone know whats going on?

Yes because they received so many requests from non-students. I'm glad I got my 4-keys.

Well all the people who lied to get keys were the ones who messed it up. Apparently they will restore access to actual students once their status as students has been confirmed. I have no idea how they will go about doing that.

They will restore access to MSDNAA after verification but Windows 7 RTM will not be there when they log back in. Both ACM and IEEE have pulled W7 from their MSDNAA sites due to the recent wave of non-student sign-ups and will not be offering it anymore this year.

Seems like my school is still offering Windows 7, so it's just the ACM and IEEE I guess, not all of MSDNAA.

you can get windows server 2008 r2 for free from dreamspark. it has all the features of windows 7 ultimate and some extra server stuff that *can* be installed *if* you want it.

the cool thing about server 2008 r2 is that there is a package manager and you just install the features you want.

still need to be a student:

    dreamspark.com
    win2008r2workstation.com

    64 bit only.

ms said they can and possibly will blacklist keys unless at random people can produce the proper credentials this was told to me today by a regional sales person directly at microsoft. same as what happened with the "free" technet deal a while back. the people that got free keys had almost all of those blacklisted..unless they could provide proper things to meet the requirements so just because you got the keys does not mean you are free yet.. now if you are a student and got keys and you can prove it if they end up asking for it then you will be fine..

the person i spoke with said there were literally 10's of thousands of people getting the access that were not students...he said it spread all over the internet even into china etc

We are both business students with MSDNAA access.

Just incase I copied down all the keys but are you sure about this?

yes it is true....as long as you are legit students and already have your keys you do not have anything to worry about

quoted from another forum from someone also at ms. basically same response i was given by the person i spoke with via phone.. "Hey Everyone, I am a college intern in the Microsoft Marketing department and wanted to clarify a few things for you. First off, ACM and IEEE will no longer be offering Window's 7 through their MSDN AA membership. There was too much abuse from non-technical students taking advantage of the offer. That being said, Microsoft has made it very easy for students to get Windows 7 today at a deeply discounted price (just $29.99).

For students who are not enrolled in a technical program on campus or without access to MSDN AA head over to http://www.win741.com/ and click on the Buy box. You can access the Professional Upgrade by clicking the link next to "Need to join your school's network domain" at the bottom of the page with the big Windows 7 Home Premium boxshot. (this is the place where you select between the 32-bit and 64-bit version)

For those of you who are enrolled in a technical program on campus, check with your campus administrator to see if your college or university is an MSDN AA subscriber (most are). With access to MSDNAA you can download Windows 7 along with a lot of other great Microsoft software for free.

If you are still debating if Windows 7 is right for you, check out this great post on the value of Windows 7 for students: http://www.crn.com/software/220001070

Let me know if you have any questions or need further clarification."

The "blacklist at random" part is a bit unsettling. Providing credentials is no problem, but I'd rather have them just blacklist everything at once, rather than find out one day that one of my keys stopped working and have to call up Microsoft, and then a couple days later find out my other key stopped working and have to repeat the process all over again.

they will not blacklist the key if you provide what they need. if you can not they will then blacklist the key

It'll be interesting to see how this all works out.

Any idea when/how they're going to audit memberships? I joined IEEE for the MSDNAA access, but I'm legit in terms of the IEEE student criteria and my program/school was on the IEEE dropdowns.

For some reason, IEEE MSDNAA has taken windows 7 off of the software list.

Not odd at all. Only the IEEE and ACM MSDNAA sites took W7 down (for obvious reasons), not the school-affiliated MSDNAA sites.

I asked my school's MSDNAA administrator about Windows 7 a week or two ago and he said that he had to talk to MS about letting him put it in the system, because even though the store had the general "W7 is now available" announcement, no one could see it in the store.

Haven't heard back from him since, guess it's down for us since we never had it up in the first place... :/
