Well, Basic comes with Vista itself. Each more expensive adds something (this is a partial list):

    Home Premium adds:
*Aero interface (in addition to Vista Basic, which is kind of like a dark version of the Luna theme XP uses by default)
    *Windows Media Centre
    Business adds:
    *Aero interface
    *Special networking features
*Shadow copies - a backup system so that if you accidently overwrite a file you can get it back
    Ultimate adds:
    *Everything the above two have
*Ultimate extras, such as video desktops and a couple games
*BitLocker, a way to keep data more secure (64-bit version only I believe)

Most people recommend Home Premium; I recommend either Home Basic (as I find Aero and Media Centre to not actually add much when you already have Vista Basic theme and Windows Media Player), or Business (if you aren't sure you'll like Vista - that way you can more easily downgrade to XP).

in terms of money, only the basic is worth it, in my opinion, unless you need to be part of a domain, in which case, business is needed.

If you like the fancy look of Vista, get Home Premium...

Ultimate adds NOTHING extra worth the added cost. I have Windows Vista Ultimate, and apart from the name, there really isn't anything ULTIMATE about it. I regret I didn't get Home Premium and spent the money on a better CPU, more RAM or a bigger harddrive. But alas, the Ultimate Extra -game Poker is decent.

The ability to connect to a Domain-this is typically only used at workplaces, although some universities may require it, most likely not though.

Vista Home Premium will likely be the most sufficient version.

Well in my opinion, Home Hasic is better than Business Basic because H > B.

Also, Home Professional is better than Business Professional because your home is better than your profession.

Ultimate is for the UFC guys.
