When downloading large files via my DSL, files 100mb-300mb (game demos), using the latest IE6 and Firefox, my downloads slow down to a halt and eventually just refuse to finish. No matter at what stage of the the download process, all large files off of CNet and other sites fail. To be exact, the demos of Psychotoxic and Painkiler are whay gove me trouble.

Could it be my Sygate firewall refusing to allow large file downloads or some kind of an OS restriction?

I run WinXP MCE 2k5 in administrator mode.

Maybe your connection is a bit too slow and the request times out? Did you try using download accelerators like Flashget? To get the direct link, right clicking and going to "Page Source" and searching the html code might help.

I use browsers, never programs such as FlashGet (used to in the past with AOL dialup) because there no longer is any need; and my DSL connection is fast enough to download these big files within 30 minutes of start. But downloads, despite my impressive speed, time out!? Why?

DownthemAll! Check out the extensions page at firefox. Should be in the most popular section; its there for a reason.

It sounds like something that could be caused by a firewall problem. Make sure the proper ports are open in your firewall. I've had the same problems. Maybe try disabling it and giving the dl a shot. That, or tinker with internet adapter settings. Good luck!

Whatever the problem was, the extension to FF did the job. Thanks. But what did prevent my downloads anyway?
