I have heard many people talk about this, but I have never seen the program or heard of a name. I tried doing a search...but touchpad just comes up with too many results.

Does anyone know of what program I can use(or if its a built in windows/synaptics feature) that automatically disables the touchpad when I have an external mouse plugged in, and enables it when I take out the mouse?

    Thanks.

Lol. Just go to the mouse options in vista itself, then go to the synaptics pad and check the box that says "disable internal pointing device..."

Ya thanks, but that is not what I am asking for.

I already know I can do that, but it becomes a pain after having to doing it everyday.

I noticed that your driver (assuming that v9.xxx is a driver) is newer then mine. I am just running stock drivers so I will try to update and see whats what.

EDIT: The latest drivers at gateway's website were the same ones I had so I went to the synaptics website and downloaded their generic one.... v10.1.8.06(Dec07). I still dont have that option :( Any ideas?

My laptop has a small button above the touchpad to enable it or disable it. I'm guessing you don't have that?

Yeah, try out the Fn-keys. (Fn+F7 disables the touchpad on my notebook)
(Press FN+F1 to know which combination disables the touchpad)

You might email them to check if they have any suggestion to disable touchpad while using external mouse :)

Whats point? They will tell me to do a system restore or reinstall windows. In the end they will tell me send it in for service

I might send my notebook in soon (probably winter break seeing as I need it for college) tho, because the touchpad has been giving me problems, like being unresponsive spontaneously for 3-5 secs (if i dont find a fix - I have not really researched a fix yet so ya).

You may want to try this program that will disable the touchpad with a hotkey

    NoTouchpad.com

It won't do it automatically when you plug a mouse in, but it's still easier than going through the control panel to disable the touchpad.
