Hi guys,
Does anyone know of any software that can disable one core of the core duo? As the core solo has about 30 minutes more battery life than a core duo and is made with the same dye, I'm wondering whether this may be a good way to increase battery life (given that one core is more than enough for word processing / surfing, etc).

Never heard of such a thing.

You can also try undervolting (using NHC or RMClock). When your processor uses less voltage, you save battery and should be able to get an improved battery time. I've successfully undervolting from 1.265v to 1.100v which has remained stable over the past few days. Haven't had the chance to try it out on battery, but others who have done a similar undervolting have noticed a significant improvement in battery life.

I have already undervolted the processor (down to 1.050V at 1.66Ghz), and it seems completely stable (2 hours of Prime95 on both cores), however, normally when I run on battery I am running with 1Ghz anyway, so 0.950V. My battery life is about 3hrs, but I am trying to squeeze more from it. I assume it can't be undervolted more than 0.95V as it would surely be stable at lower voltages.

doesn't it automatically shut down one core when not needed?

i believe there is an affinity setting in task manager that lets u select how many cores to use for each running program.

Yap, you can select each program to use 1 core only. But i doubt anyone would do that.
you can use performance management to underclock CPU when you run on batt. -
Seriously underclocking the video card will help increase battery time. Also, its best to lock the processor at 1GHz on battery since less power is used. I doubt you will be doing anything terribly demanding while on battery power anyway, and like you saud 1 GHz is good enough for word/surfing.

To disable the cores on a dell at least you can do it in the BIOS..this is prolly true on other notebooks aswell.
