Go into My Computer from the Start Menu, and then click "view system information" from the task pane on the left.
Next, click the hardware tab in the new window that comes up. Then click on "Device Manager".
A new window should appear. In this window, click on the plus symbol next to "Disk Drives". Then right click your optical drive and click properties.
In the new window that comes up, choose the option saying "Do not use this device (disable)".
Switch off your computer and remove the optical drive. You should be able to use your laptop without the optical drive. -
You don't need to disable it. If its not installed, your computer will not find it during it initial POST. So there is no issue.
Yes, you can use your computer without an optical drive. -
thanks for all the posts
Rogue but the drive is installed and i can use it...so i heard I must diasble it so that when the os is started it will not keep on searching to find the drive...
if I disable it can I activate it with the procedure LilMyze stated?
thanks -
if you simply install the drivers that will come with your new optical drive that should be fine.
You might not even have to do anything. Once you've slotted the drive in and boot up windows, XP will probably use the generic drivers to configure/enable the device. -
cheers!!!
so I will just remove it and don't set nothing...
thannks
