Hi, newbie here (also not really a techie, so I'll be sounding like an idiot here, sorry). I'd been trying to change the boot order on my ASUS X401U to boot from a DVD instead of the Windows 8 it came in with, and like a lot of what I saw I only have three options (Continue, Troubleshoot, Turn off PC) when I restart. So I looked around for guides, figured it was the Secure Boot option I hadn't even heard of, and found this guide on the forums somewhere: How-to Disable Secure-Boot and Boot from CD/DVD on Windows8 Uefi PC and Pre-Installed

The problem: everything was fine until I went to the UEFI Firmware Settings - Restart step. On the Advanced Tab on the BIOS (or whatever you call it) I couldn't find Disable Secure Boot. All it had was the following:

    Legacy USB Support (En)
    Internal Pointing Device (En)
    Wake Up Lid Open (En)
    Power Off Energy Saving (En)
    -Start Easy Flash
    -SATA Configuration
    -Network Stack

I also don't have a Boot Options Tab, just a Boot tab.

    "Launch CSM=Always" - I only have an Enabled/Disabled here.
    "1st Boot Device=DVD
Disable All Boot options on Bottom" - I only have Boot Option Priorities; Boot option 1: Windows Boot Manager (PO: Hitachi...), and add and delete boot options.

    What do I do?

The Hotkey may be different on Asus... but all computers have a boot order hotkey on startup (not BIOS key), mine is F12. You press it and from there you can choose "boot from CD." If you can't find it there, some BIOS' have the option to force boot order. Also on at least 1 PC I owned I could boot from CD by pressing "C" rapidly after the BIOS boot screen

Just now I tried the Delete key and it led me to that same menu.

Update: I was looking around and found another person with almost the same problem as I do. If USB is not listed in BIOS as a boot option, does that mean the machine can't boot from USB? - Super User - same Boot tab options.

I went to a technician and he fiddled around among the Boot Options but we found that my external DVD drive, which my computer doesn't have a problem reading otherwise, isn't being read - at least he'd inserted a flash drive and it was found under the Boot Options.

So, does this mean I really can't boot from DVD on Windows 8?

It's not a Windows 8 problem, as I can boot from my 2 windows 8 machines from DVD. Sounds like an ASUS problem, so I don't really know any fixes for that. However, as you said it works fine from USB flash drive, you can use a number of free programs to burn your disk to the USB drive.

    Hi
I had a problem like that and I asked from technical supporter, I've tried that and my problem was solved
    1) Hit F2 and go to setup
    2) Go to Secure tab and change secure boot to Disable
    3) Go to boot tab and change Fast Boot to disable too
    4) Press F10 to save and restarting
    5) Again hit F2 and go to seup
    6) Go to Boot tab and change Lunch CSM to enable
    7) Press F10 to save and restarting
    8) Hit Escape button to direct boot menu
