Hey, I've run into a rather perplexing problem with my laptop. Today I updatd Vista (I tend to do it on Wednesdays out of habitat and the availability of the free time) to the latest patches available on Windows Updater. I haven't upgraded to SP1 RC yet and the biggest change was the service pack for Office 2007. However, upon rebooting I was warned that I had changed my system configuration even though the last time I altered this was a few days ago, I had rebooted and asked for no further warnings. When the OS had fully loaded I noticed my battery indicator had disappeared as can be seen here:

I haven't altered the items to be shown on my taskbar either and strangely the option to hide or show the battery meter has disappeared. This wouldn't be a major issue since I have the RM Clock battery indicator however I do use the icon mostly for switching between power profiles which is a regular occurrence for me each day (roughly 5-6 times a day at least) and such it is mainly this shortcut feature in the taskbar I miss.
Has anyone else experienced something similar or even better, know how to solve this problem?

If you right click on the taskbar under the context menu you should get an option to "Customize Notification Icons", click that. Then see if there's an option to see your battery always. If not, you can always use RMClock to switch between profiles, post back if you don't know how.

this has happened to me several times including the network and sound icons missing.. had to reboot sometimes a few times to get them to reappear

I found that restarting the laptop solved the problem. Before the restart, the options here

Were greyed out and unselectable aside from the clock option. I'm presuming this was why I couldn't see any of the icons in the notification area. Its strange that a simple restart made the options available again. Thanks for your help! -
Often a reboot doesn't work. Here's how to fix it:

install into registry, then reboot.
