My Gateway M series (in sig) has been doing this for 3 days now. It works fine when it's on (a little slower than normal though) but after I shut it and leave it on while I'm at work or asleep (8-11 hours) it opens up and just has a black screen, and as soon as I press the power button it turns off, I don't need to hold it for five seconds. All the lights like power on, wireless, charging are on, I don't recall the Hard drive access light flickering.

So, once it's off I turn it back on ('cause that's why I went to the computer). And it starts up asking "do you want to start windows normally or do a system something?" I pick start windows normally, as always, and it then starts a disc check and starts deleting apparently corrupt files. I have AVG and it does a full scan twice a week, so I really doubt it's a virus. I also am very weary of the sites I go on.

I have left the computer on for extended times like this since I got it, so that's nothing new. It can breath just fine it's sitting on my desk.

Any ideas? I'm ready to buy a new $350-$419 laptop to tide me over until I can get a great one. I REALLY want to avoid doing a system restore.

You should run chkdsk and let it run to completion; however, it does sound like your hard drive might be failing, so you might want to be prepared for that.

You could also try doing a repair installation from the recovery console instead of doing a full re-installation.

That long disk check is what it was doing at every start up. It hasn't done it for 2 days now, which is good. But I just picked up a new laptop to replace this one if it dies, got a great deal on the new one.
