I've got Vista x64 Ultimate, while trying to use Disk Cleanup tool, the dialog freezes at "Scanning: system error memory dump files" and won't finish. I'm guessing there's something large I can remove from this tool, what can I do about this?

hmm... try searching for *.dmp files, if you find any huge, delete them manually..? (these are only records of applications or system crashes, good for troubleshooting, but not vital for running anything)

Just curious - how do you know its actually freezing? It may be just cleaning up files - I know mine originally took quite a while.

Check you HDD light for activity.
And with long I do mean 5 to 10 minutes easily if you use it seldomly.

(and tell us how long it "freezes")

Agreed. Sometimes it can take several minutes.

sometimes it can take TENS of minutes (especially when your HDD is large and full of mess needing to be compressed, like vmware images and stuff), i've found out that a lunchbreak is the best time for running this thing.

No results found for *.dmp. :(

I left it on for an hour and it would not move. There is full 2.4GHz activity but nothing is happening. I can try longer but it just seems weird because I just did a fresh install and only installed all of my apps and drivers. The computer is new.

I found some fixes with disk cleaning on XP but nothing about Vista.

Try to run CCleaner with all teh dump checkdisk etc. stuff ticked, then try again.

CPU activity indicates the computer is doign something.

Yeah I have CCleaned before hand.

It looks like after only doing a search for *.dmp files, disk cleaner worked in a few minutes. I'm not saying there's a causation, but it does seem strange and I can't explain that. Only 3 GB of Hibernation files were found too.

But anyway thanks a lot guys. :D
