if l try opening any video file from my desktop by right clicking on it -> open with -> divx it gives me the following message:

    "blahfile.avi is not a valid win32 application"

This happened both before and after l reformatted. l also tried reinstalling divx twice and l keep getting the same results. BUT, if l open divx then select the file through it it will play fine. Anyone have a clue why?

Sorry, no. Have you searched the DIVX site? It seems like more an issue with DIVX than your PC.

I searched the site and the FAQ they have but couldn't find my issue.

Why don't you try K-lite Pack; I've been using it for years now and haven't had any problems. First uninstall the old codecs, however!

It sounds to me more like a file association error than a codec error.
