Just wondered if I need windows defender running in vista? As I have kaspersky 7.0 internet secuirty suite atm.

it does not do any harm, & if u have enough resources - aka beaucoup ram - leave it alone. vista is so touchy that other than the nagging uac, where one just turns off, i leave everything else alone.
cheers ... -
If you have another solution in place it won't hurt anything to turn it off.
-
It willl be advisable to turn it on. Another line of defence will not hurt. Windows Defender once caught a malware that none of my security solution detected.

Its up to you. I turned mine off there is much better monitoring software out there. Buts its not a bad one either. Just didn't like it ttaking up resources.

No, it is not necessary. I Turned it off.

Real-time spyware blocking is a performance drag (almost as much as actual spyware), but if you're prone to infecting computers, i'd leave it on.

Windows Defender is one of the least-effective anti-malware programs on the market. Use Spybot, Adaware, Spyware Doctor, and/or AVG Anti-Spyware instead. Stay far away from Spysweeper, any McAfee, Norton, and Trend Micro products if you care at all about the usability and general performance of your system.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
I turned mine off. I've had no problems.
But then again, I don't boot Vista on my machine too often. -
I have turned it off for now, anything else I should know about being a resource hog?
-
I just turned it off. The new AVG has anti-spyware and I haven't had anything from either of them find any spyware ever so I thought it was a waste
-
I turned mine off, but I always wonder if I should have left it on.

Hi.
The new avg could not spot spyware if it fell over it.
Do not trust it!
Try Avast or Avira.
Regards
John.

How do you turn it off? I have it set not to automatically scan, but, other than that, I don't see how I can turn it off. =.=

control panel/ security / windows defender / tools / option / untick automatic scanning / click save

John. -
Go to run... type 'services.msc'
scroll down to 'Windows Defender' and DISABLE it & STOP it.
Good riddance! -

Hi.
Or you can do that!

Windows defender is a decent real time spyware protection program. So it's advisable to keep it ON unless if you have any other security suite / real time AS running.
-
Thanks for the tip, coolguy.
-
And if u are looking for best Realtime Anti-malware/spyware then use ThreatFire..
its the real deal..and its free. -
I left it on , doesn't hurt...
-
I think I'm gonna leave it on.

I thought I would post that I have (at least temporarily) changed my mind and restarted Windows Defender on my Vista Home Premium (SP1) notebook.
