As the thread title asks. Or do I download and apply them manually? Thanks.

Only if you choose to receive updates for Windows and other products from Microsoft.

I am sorry, I don't understand what you mean. I have windows automatically download the updates, but I choose when I want to install them. I know that there are different categories of updates, like critical patches/updates, hardware drivers and optional updates, but I have never personally seen an update for Office exist in any of these categories. -

in windows update, you have the option to download only windows updates, or more microsoft product updates. (it's some yellow box at the bottom, right before you press search for updates)

Go to the Office website and choose to receive updates for Office products. It'll install the addition, and then you'll receive Office updates along with Windows updates.
*edit*
Or, on the Update page, next to "You receive updates", click on the more info link (that might not be the exact wording, as I've done it and don't have a reference to quote from anymore). You will be taken to a page where you can "opt in" to Microsoft updates. -
As others have said, make sure you have your computer set to "Microsoft Update" as opposed to "Windows Update" and you will receive all the critical and optional office updates.

I've attached a screenshot in English where you would find the link to download Microsoft Update from Windows Update. Sorry for my bad touchpad skills

Microsoft Update likes to run extra background processes that rampage up to 100% CPU periodically however.
-
100% CPU? That seems a little extreme; I've never experienced anything like that due to Microsoft Update. What are your updates settings? I have mine set to notify me of any new available updates but not to install them automatically, and I haven't experienced the problem you mention.
-
I have it set to Install Automatically and it's never happened.
-
I have the same settings and have never experience a CPU issue either.

Thanks so much everybody. The screen shots are especially good. I am going to have to go back and check my machines and make sure that option is checked on. I don't remember turning it on though...

One of many threads about it.
Even the official Microsoft advice was to disable Microsoft Update and just use Windows Update. -
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones then since I've had no issues with Microsoft update.
Do Office Patches/Updates come down with Windows Update?
