I recieved my new ASUS laptop last week and decided to reinstall Vista, but without all the crappy programs that was installed on it when i recieved it. I used the recovery cd that was included. Before using it i had 64bit version of Vista. Now after using the recovery cd, in control panel it says "System type: 32bit operating system".....Does that mean that using the recovery install a 32bit instead of 64 bit? I ordered the 64bit as an extra.

If so, how do i install a 64bit Vista. I have the CD and a key. But if i chose
to install the 64bit now, wont it just add another operating system to my HDD? I will have both the 32bit AND the 64bit? How do i install the 64bit only?

    Thanks

    Ok.

You currently have a 32-bit OS in your computer, so the recovery disk must be a 32-bit disk.

1:Backup your files that you want to keep.

    2:
If your 64-bit OS Disk is a Recovery Disk:
Then insert your 64-bit Recovery Disk and Reinstall to Factory Settings/Reformat HDD. You will then have a 64-bit OS and it will erase/overwrite the old/current (32-bit) OS.

If the 64-bit Disk is not a Recovery Disk, but a Microsoft Disk:
Insert Disk and go through with installation, then if it asks, you do want to overwrite/reformat the Harddrive/OS. Then, it will do so, and you will have the 64-bit OS.

    3: Restore Backed Up Files.

Ok will do so. I tried booting from the CD (which is a 64 bit VISTA windows cd btw) and installing that way before trying the recover cd, but it would only install a new OS and put the old in a folder. Not delete it. That way i would have 2 OS installed. Maybe upgrading will be different.

I figured it out finally. There was a option when installing the new 64bit that deleted the old partition. I had to go to "advanced options" and i didnt find it the first time. ;)
