I use Symantec Corporate Edition. Get it free from work. I admit its a hit on resources though. It's only caught a couple of spywares and thats about it. I'm curious though as why you don't need it? I guess I'm the better safe than sorry but I've read some of your posts and you seem to be an expert of sorts. Thanks

Within the first few days of installing Vista, I downloaded the Windows Live OneCare trial. I like it so far, not terribly intrusive, and seems to do the job just fine. I may just subscribe after my trial period ends.

I wouldnt be so quick to judge. I have been using it ever since it was released and it does a pretty good job. Granted I dont get too many viruses/spyware in the first place. but from what I have seen it does a decent job. Plus the fact that you get 3 licenses and compared to other All in one packages it is very competitively priced.

After using the free home version of Avast I went ahead and bought the Pro. I really like the program specially a voice that will tell you if it finds a virus with an alarm going off. I've used the program for so long that I believe Avast deserve a bit of a monetary compensation. When Vista was tauted as a very secure OS everyone was impressed but it only took a couple of months before someone exploited it's weakness. What a pie in the face for Microsoft! It's all hype.

If you don't use any antivirus software, how do you know if you get a virus? You don't. That means, 1) you *think* you have no viruses, and 2) you might be helping spreading the virus to others.
Most viruses are spread through computers owned by people who think they don't "need" antivirus, or that "they never visit suspicious sites, so they're ok".
Just fyi, you do not need to visit "dangerous websites" to get a virus. If you believe it's that easy, then I'm willing to bet that your system has already spent more than a few hours of CPU time in a botnet, sending out spam and/or viruses.

And as a little side note, Vista might in theory be more secure than XP out of the box. But if it means people stop using antivirus or firewalls, it's vastly *less* secure than a decent XP box.

miner: Same problem. OneCare might have found a few viruses for you, but that doesn't really matter. What matters is how many it lets through, which is harder to count, but in all the tests I've seen, it's performed terribly.

I am not sure if i agree with all that. If you are carefull with what you download and open then I think you can manage without a virus scanner. I know of many people (me one of them) who do use scanners and have not gotten a virus alert in the last few years. I dont remember when I last had a virus alarm. Windows 98 sounds about right.
But anyway I use NOD32 under Vista and use a router as firewall. Better safe then sorry.

Wave, how do you find NOD32 on system resources. Anyone else use NOD32 and how do they like it? Is it light on the system? I am interested in this, Avast!, or AVG for my new laptop.

I am using Norton Internet Security 2007. Suprisingly is not a resource hog at all. I dont notice any slowdown. 2007 release of Norton have its codes changed significanly i guess.

NOD32 is fine with resources. It is using 32mb right now. Scanning seems fast too but I dont have anything to compare it too.

I also use a copy of Sumantec Corporate that my school pay's for... really compared to the horribly bloated conusmer products Symantec puts out, it's really quite nice... and minimal. I can't remember the last time I had a virus, but with three processes totalling 7.5 MB of RAM, I can live with the small hit for some peace of mind.

Do i use Antivir in my Vista? Well, i'm going to, as soon the Vista version comes out. Which should be today, at least that's what it says on their website, but so far nothing.

I use Norton Internet Security 2007. In these days i think it is a v. risky business not to use an antivirus. Like the other guys said, u don't have to visit any suspicious sites to get infected. And, if your antivirus doesn't give you alerts, it doesn't mean that it has not blocked any virus of malware. And what scares me more than viruses these days, is malware and spyware; because they all want to steal your financial info, your identity. So, IMHO your at risk if you don't use a security suite.

Which online scanner do you use, qohelet?

I also don't use any anti-virus software. I don't visit many strange sites and pretty careful at what I download.

    I do, however, use Adaware.

Yes. I use Kaspersky. It is VERY resource friendly, and it does a good job at detecting. Nothing so far since I got my computer a month ago.

I'm planning to switch to the 64bit vista. Currently i have the 32bit vista and am using AVG antivirus.

A small question : AVG pro VS Avast! which is lightweight on memory?

McAfee Corp. 8.5 does wonders to block viruses. Just the other day i downloaded a file I thought was safe and the moment I went to unzip it.. Mcafee popped up with like 10 virii and deleted them all before infection. I deleted the original file eventually and did a scan.. nothing got onto my system. McAfee also releases new DAT files daily.

Yes and no. since getting Vista, i tried Avast, AVG, AntiVir and many other stuffs. Although my machine came with Norton Internet + Antivirus 2007 90-day trial i uninstalled it to give way with other AVs. But I ended up using Norton Norton Antivirus Again. It's more reliable in my opinion. most connections in and out are well handled with norton. Those Microsoft products attempting connect are also warned by Norton. And scanning my system with Norton after switching back has detected 1 Trojan threat where the antiviruses I tried didn't.... well it's just a matter of preference though. use the ones that suits you best. :)
