Despite seeing a little use in it. I personally turn it off coz it's annoying as hell. And I know what I install/pages I visit online.

Can some mod add a YES or NO poll to this thread?
I did choose the option to add a poll, but it didn't work. -
UAC is off on all my Vista rigs. I think it's a great feature, but I don't like having a black screen for like 10 seconds when UAC pops up.
-J.B. -
Nope.
(10 Chars) -
no, turned it off after trying it out for a few weeks and finding it annoyed the hell out of me, its nothing but a pain in the a**
-
I disabled it on an older machine I had, because of the delay, but when I upgraded to 2GB of RAM the problem was gone, so I leave it on now.

I use XP

i never stuck with vista, took it off and put xp on my laptop, but that was the first thing i turned off in vista
-
OFF and I was so happy when I stumbled across how to turn it off. That's probably the most anoying thing about Vista for me, so far
-
Off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Off!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I have it on.
-
One vote for "Off" here...I don't find it really all that useful.
-
On!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I'm running as a standard user, so I have to type in my admin password at UAC prompts instead of just clicking Continue.
And I rarely get UAC prompts these days, except for one networking issue which gives me about one prompt a day. When I fix that, I'll really never get prompts. -
Off!
One of the first things I do after a fresh install of Vista is disable UAC.
I can see the extra security it provides but it's anoying interuptions outweigh the extra protection....if your tech savvy you can easily live without it.
I have also had issues in the past were some network printers will not install unless UAC is on!..... then once you have installed the printer you can turn UAC off again and continue to use the printer - just an annoyance really. -
A poll has been added... Please vote if you havent already.
-
UAC is off for me.
-
I have it off, and just turned it off for my brothers notebook. It's very annoying, especially when you're trying to install a lot of software.
-
Please vote guys! Off HERE FTW
-
Thank you
-
This is exactly the reason why I turn it off and leave it off...
-
Off! UAC is the biggest annoyance in Vista
-
I also turned it off..but my question is does it affect any functionality? its very annoying seeinf the blackscreen always...s**ks to say the least...
-
uhh it makes your functionality faster?
honestly most people know what they are clicking and getting themselves into, its great for people who are starting to use computers and slowly learning. -
Would you like to remove the virus ?
Are you sure you want to remove the virus ?
Are you very sure you want to remove the virus ?
confirmations.. confirmations......
I have it Off -
Off...
!!!!!
-
Right, most of us say OFF. I was a bit scared but y'all re-assued my decision
-
Off. UAC is only helpful for people who use AOL.
-
it doesn't really bother me so i have it on
-
I used WinBubble1.5 to change the settings to where UAC itself is ON, but those annoying confirmations are OFF!!!!
-
You're all mischaracterizing UAC as a bunch of "Are you sure?" prompts for noobs who don't know what they're doing. It's not that at all. It's there so that if something runs that could make changes to your system, it makes sure that you're the one running it rather than some piece of malware. ("If you started this action, click Continue.") It lets your web browser, media player, etc. run in a lower-privilege mode so that any malicious web page or media file with an exploit doesn't get complete control over your system.
Millions of people can't be wrong! -
I have it on.
I'm not sure what you guys did to make it give you so many prompts, but I NEVER get prompts unless I access the Management Console or install software(which isn't very often).
I don't find it annoying at all. -
I use TweakUAC
It silences most of the annoying prompts but leaves the backup-type stuff on, so I never see the prompts on (Windows thinks UAC is off) -
I use the 'Quiet mode' tweak.
-
I used to have it off, but I figured I'd see how badly it affects my use of the computer, and it really does not get in my way. It only gets annoying when I'm messing with files in the system folders, not my personal folder. Now I have it on, and I rarely ever see it.
-
i have UAC on but i made so that the black screen would not appear and it just pop up w/0 any deay

UAC is off. I want to feel I am in charge.
John -
That's like saying you leave the door to your house unlocked so you can feel like you're in charge, rather than having to fumble with keys.
Leave it off and feel like you're in charge... or turn it on and actually be in charge by having control over what processes can run with admin privileges on your machine. -
Nope, leaving it on isn't fumbling with the keys. It's like going to your bathroom, and someone on the other side is asking if you really want to come in. Imagine that, when you have diarrhea and need to go to the bathroom many times...
-
UAC doesn't work that way. It only appears if you are installing software all the time or when you're making changes to the windows system files. I rarely see UAC prompts when I'm working. UAC warns you when a malicious file is trying to install in the windows folder, so you can stop it just in time.
LEAVE IT ON
!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I'm a software ninja. I install/uninstall many apps all the time. UAC ticks me off when i'm trying to test out 10 different softwares and don't have much time, and every other second it's asking me if i really want to do something.
-
Nope. I go to the bathroom a lot more often than I get UAC prompts. Even without diarrhea.
Actually, a more accurate analogy than the one I used in my last post would be that UAC is like keeping your important and valuable stuff in a safe upstairs, so that not everyone who you let into the living room has automatic access to absolutely everything.
Calvin, in your case, I can see that. If I were putting together that best free software thread, and I were installing and uninstalling zillions of programs to test them, I'd probably turn off UAC too. But you're kind of a special case. Most people aren't installing and uninstalling programs on a daily (or even weekly) basis... at least I'm not. I install a bunch of programs in the first week or two after getting the computer or installing the OS... and then I only rarely install or uninstall anything after that. -
ON. i install everything on other drives but the system drive.
tip if u want to live with UAC. DONT install in the system drive. much safer and less hassle. -
You mean install programs on a different drive than the OS? Why would it matter?
-
UAC doesnt pop up on me when i install or do stuff outside of the system drive if i install of C: or move stuff to it UAC pops up everytime
-
UAC will pop up when you run an installer no matter what. It has to... it pops up as soon as you run the installer, before you ever tell it what directory to install to.
Any program that looks like an installer, it tries to run with elevated permissions, causing a UAC prompt. Make a copy of notepad.exe. Rename it "setup.exe" and run it. You'll get a UAC prompt.
As far as moving files around, just stay out of the Windows and Program Files directories (and anything else you don't have permissions on) and UAC won't bother you. It doesn't matter what drive you're on; it just matters whether or not you have permissions on the file and directory.
EDIT: Actually that renaming trick probably won't work for notepad or the programs that came with Vista, since they should have something in the binary header telling Windows what privileges are needed. But for older programs (anything pre-Vista, and plenty of newer stuff where they haven't added privileges info to the binary), it should work. -
in ANY case, as to what UAC really is designed for, i feel much better off without it. I did with XP and Vista is no different for me
-
I admit UAC does have it's benefits and would agree that for the average user and noob they should keep it on. However for me personally, IT is what I do and I am continually changing and updating my pc's with different software and settings. I have powerful hardware so I can make these changes quickly... I do not want a popup every 2 minutes asking me a question.
If you have a good internet security product (like Kaspersky 7.0) and know what your doing you can live without the annoyance of UAC.
Also not all malicious software needs to modify Windows files/settings for it to do its work.... -
I'm by no means a noob yet I still have UAC on.
It reallly isn't annoying to me at all.
Do you have UAC ON or OFF?
