    Hey,

I was just wondering what my fellow laptop users do. Do you guys use hibernate or sleep with your laptops? I've never used either, I always have the settings in power options set to "do nothing" and I have hibernate and sleep deactivated (not shown) in my menus. My laptop is always at home and plugged in so I have no need for either of these features, when I close my lid it just shuts off the screen (but does not put it in hibernate or sleep status.)

Just curious if I'm alone here or if others don't use either of these features.

    Thanks!

I don't have SSD in my laptop but my next one will definitely have it. I leave my laptop on 24/7 for the most part (lid closed when not using it) but I never use sleep or hibernate...I need all my things running in background at all times lol (I won't go into details.) :p

On a serious note, I always shut down before I go to bed.

When I have a bunch of YouTube videos open that I don't wanna mess up the progress and other stuff, that's when I hibernate so that when I turn on my taptop next time, everything is the same way I left it.

I never use sleep though. like ever!

I use shut down 95% of the time.

I use sleep when I need to save my work and will return in like 30 mins to 1 hr.

I use hibernate when I need to swap batteries and don't wanna lose my work.

Sleep mostly, sometimes shutdown. Never hibernate, it's pointless with modern hardware in my opinion.

I force shutdown by pressing the power directly :D

    Nah... joking aside..

I never use hibernate or sleep or even hybrid shutdown (to prepare for Fast start-up on next boot)... I only use the old classic full shut down :)

Back in the Windows XP days I used to use hibernate all the time because it was several times faster than a full shutdown and restart. With a modern OS and SSD all hibernate does is reduce your SSD size by how much memory you have. Bios post takes longer than it takes the OS to load cold, and going in to hibernation takes longer than a full bootup.

I will very occasionally use sleep, as that is still mildly useful. It is very fast to leave sleep vs boot, but usually the longer wait for full boot is not a problem.

Hibernate I don't bother with since I have an SSD, there's little time difference between starting up and coming out of hibernation. You can disable hibernation to free up drive space: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2859-enable-disable-hibernate-windows-10-a.html

Sleep I leave enabled for the odd occasion I want to keep my sessions going but am on battery and don't need to use the laptop for 15+ minutes.

I put it to sleep like a maniac to check if my Wifi Adapter vanishes because MSI employees don't give a crap about reports.

But on a serious note i used to leave it on till bed time, but i changed my mind when i forgot it on 24 hours straight. So now i set it to go sleep after a hour or two of inactivity

Hibernate is a waste of disk space.

I put the PC to sleep overnight or when it won't be used for more than 2-3 hours. Every 2 weeks or so I shut it down or restart.

I use shutdown most of the time even before the times that i didnt use an SSD

I only use sleep if i'll be AFK for over 15 mins to a few hours and when im taking my laptop out of the house at times for work.

The only time i use hibernate is when my battery gets way too low (7%) which it'll hibernate itself to prevent the battery to go any lower but i normally charge it way before it reaches that low. Also when i need to remove the battery in order to open my laptop, Still trying to break that habit...

In power settings i set my display to turn off after 5 mins and set it to do nothing when closing the lid because its annoying when my laptop sleeps every time i closed the lid.

My computers have two modes: ON and OFF.

I disable hibernation at the command prompt with powercfg -h off and I disable the ASPM and ACPI options in the BIOS.

I terminated my hybrid sleep/hibernate mode as it was causing my computer to go in Comatose stat everything it happened. Now after disabling it it works as it should.

I usually only restart my laptop every time it needs to for specific reasons.

The rest of the time, it's either on or in standby (sleep?). The act of closing the lid puts laptop to standby when on battery power.

With newer computers, resuming from standby is almost as fast as just opening the lid. I believe with macs, that has long been the case.

Me too. Actually, I am that much radical that I even turn my TV off if I am going outside, go to bed or simply don't intend to watch it for an hour or longer.

The logic behind it is that the less you use the machine, it lasts longer. Stupid perhaps, but I don't know.

This is sound logic and common sense. Leaving anything turned on 24/7 will abbreviate its lifespan. The old logic that leaving computers running forever was somehow good for them and made them last longer was ludicrous.

yeah the salesman at the computer shop back in 1998 told me that BS that turning the computer on/off and in turn the motherboard will fry it faster than leaving it on all the time so I must pay more electricity and shorten the lifespan all my computer to save a capacitor from burning

Not fuses but capacitors in mb and hdd bearings might be an issue, if a server has been on 24/7 last 7-10 years it might not boot again when shut down.

But so far I think I found the suspect software that is the cause of my computer not being able to hibernate/sleep and it's a epub reading program. I know this has to be the culprit causing the wrong sleep because if I restart or force restart with that program not active it works as intended.

I use sleep a lot. I have disabled hibernation, though using hibernate when swapping batteries in order to continue working where I left off (mentioned above) is a cool idea I never thought of. While at home I have the laptop attached via Thunderbolt 3 to a 4k monitor and via HDMI to a pen tablet for notes and reading. I just hate it when I use sleep then wake the computer to find all of my windows moved around. *sigh* Is there a solution for that?

I use both depending on the situation. Mostly Hibernate, so I can resume my work later (perhaps days later) without blowing through my relatively poor battery life. Sometimes Standby if I'm going to be using it again within half an hour. Occasionally I'll shut down, particularly if things are behaving strangely or my touchpad driver has crashed.

I have the lid set to do nothing, since it's common enough that I'll move the laptop across areas and use it again in a minute or two. Given that I'm usually on my 2007 laptop, the difference between this and standby/hibernate is not negligible.

On my desktop, I usually leave it up 24/7 donating CPU power to the World Community Grid. Occasionally I task one of my laptops with joining it, usually the cooler-running HP mobile workstation.

Hibernate does not waste power, it's a full shut down as well just save a snapshot on whatever you had on your desktop to the hiberfile.sys so that when you start up again, all your programs, sites, etc, are open the same way you left them

Hibernate was broken (I have not used it for a while, so don't know if it still is). Most of my laptops are dual boot and every time I hibernated one OS, boot into secondary OS and come back to hibernated one, I would have corrupted drives. I suspected, on resume from hibernation MS never checked if file system directory stored in memory of hibernated system was "dirty" and used that to update the drive, corrupting it's file allocation table and directory tree for all the files that were changed during hibernation by operations of secondary OS.After being forced to restore drives from backup few times and loosing some data in the process, I decided to never use hibernation again, even on single boot computers. So I use sleep during daytime and always shut it down at night, since MS has some tasks scheduled in the middle of a night and I would "freak out" if my computer woke up and was running on it's own unattended, suspecting virus etc. My computer's cold boot takes 10-15 sec, so hibernation doesn't even save that much time either, like it used to with old HDD.

I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this forums comments, but I can say I didn't expect to learn as much as I did. *Makes mental note to shut down my brand new laptop when it arrives*

Seriously did not know there was honestly a difference between shutting down through the menu and a force shut down at the power button.

    Shutdown, always.

Quick and easy enough to cold boot from a SSD, so I don’t bother with either sleeping or hibernating.

Shutdown still is using power if you want no wasting power unplug from the wall outlet.

Unless you have apps running then for most it doesn't matter but there are those that need to keep it running. Like small and large business and government offices and Servers their systems needs to be available to click to login and go 24/7. Just imagine if a private, company, and or organization Server shuts down ever night because they feel they want to save on Electricity. Then you have no Server access til they restarted their next day and if open hours conflict with yours well then you be up the creek. We ask alot but forget the larger computing community does affect us in return. Were more connected then we think or realize then we want to think.

I don't use anything. I have it set to where the computer never sleeps on power, but turns the screen off after a few minutes. I just Shutdown when I'm done, considering booting up takes a whopping 15 seconds.

Thanks to this thread I've been trying out hibernation at night before I go to bed when I have my research work spread over multiple windows, including notes and pdf files on a connected Wacom CIntiq (which has a different resolution to the main screen). Sleep mode used to reset all of the Windows to the laptop monitor, and shut-down would have me wasting time setting everything up again. I had settled for letting the laptop remain on overnight (mobile workstation designed for 24/7 uptime anyway) but that never seemed like the right thing to do.

Anyway, hibernation has been working a treat: everything pops back up as I left it. Awesome! Thanks for the tip!

Hibernation can go home. Save some space on your ssd, remove that option. Type "powercfg /h off" and voila, 6-26gb free (YMMV).

I only sleep when I am gone for an hour or two, don't feel like looking at the startup process.
