I accidentally closed my unsaved essay while switching to another program. Since I didn't save it at anytime, I can't find any autosave copies. Is there any way to get it back?

It didn't ask you to save when you closed the file?
The only thing that I can think of is to run a search of the computer for all *.tmp files that were created, modified, or accessed on the day that this accident occurred. Make a copy of them in another directory and start changing the extensions to *.doc formats (which is why you need another copy of those files in another directory). If Word saved your document while you were still working on it, it would have been writing to a temp file (.tmp) in the process.
AFAIK, that is the only chance of recovery that you have. Good luck. -
go back into word and look for it on the recent documents window

I can't recall word prompting me to save, but I could have acted too hastily. I did a search of my computer using search companion, windows desktop search, and google desktop search, but couldn't find anything. Anyways, thank for the advise... I suppose I have to spend another day working on it to compensate. Oh well...

Also do a search for *.bak files. If the option to autmatically save backups was enabled in Word, there will be a backup file somewhere. If it wasn't enabled, you might be out of luck.
Otherwise, as mentioned above, you can try a search for temp folders (look in all of them) and there may be something there.
