When I open word by going to Start - All Programs - New Office Document it works fine. But the problem occurs when I open a word document from Windows Explorer.

A windows installer window comes up and says it is configuring Microsoft Office, and prompts me to insert the XP disc. But Microsoft Office is alredy installed!!
I haven't been messing around with registry keys or program files. I even checked in the MS Office folder in Program files and WinWord was there, in the folder. I even looked in the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and Microsoft Office XP was there, installed. What could be the problem and how can I solve it?

More worryingly, it is starting to happen when I use Open New Office Document in all programs to start up MS Word. And when I click cancel, on the Windows Installer, Word opens! Even more strange. I've even done a virus scan with AVG and also Ad-Aware but there were no viruses.

    Someone Help!! :( :(

    Its not a virus.

You just need to insert the disk and let it do its thing. It will only do this once. This happens alot when you delete the installer files off of your computer.

ah okay...the problem is SG I don't have an XP installation disc. My mum use to this dell for her work and it had a few viruses on. My dad took it to a small PC shop to get it reformatted and he put XP on it. So, I don't have the disc. I might be able to borrow one of someone but is there any other way of getting around without the disc?

And this computer was had office Xp since about 2 years. It's a bit odd that it's happening now!

Did you recently start using a new feature in Word? If you look at the install options with MS Office, you'll see that for many components there's an option to 'Install on First Use'. If you never used that particular feature, it may have never tried to install it.
