I use both Windows and OS X. Day to day I work using a 27" iMac but I will be using a windows laptop every day for at least the next 6 months.

I'm a big fan of Windows 7 and in the majority of situations I prefer it to OS X. One thing I do love about OS X is the ability to assign a function key to cropping the screen.

On my iMac F5 takes a screenshot of the whole screen and F6 gives me a marquee tool that lets me crop any area. I use F6 99% of the time when working.

I was curious as to whether there are any scripts available for Windows that offers this functionality. I've tried one or two but in practice they don't work well.

Do you know of any Windows scripts that allow you to assign a function key or shortcut to doing a screenshot for a defined area?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Have you tried the built-in Snipping Tool (search for it in the Start Menu)? That allows you to use a rectangle select to capture an area of your choosing. Also, in case you weren't aware, Alt + PrtScrn captures only the active window.

Yeah I've tried the snipping tool. It doesn't work really well in practice. I need to go back to the snipping tool and then select the cropping option, if the area I want to take a screenshot isn't being shown I then need to go back and pick it again. It ends up being longer than just taking a screenshot of the whole screen and then cropping it :(

Grabbing the active window doesn't really help that much as it gives the same problem as taking a full screenshot i.e. I would still have to crop the part of the screenshot I want.

I'm trying out a script called Greenshot. It seems pretty good :)

Greenshot doesn't capture parts of the screen that aren't viewable either. If you have to scroll down to get more you loose it.

Yeah. That seems to be an issue that most screenshot programs have. I'd love to use a program that didn't do this as it would save me having to join two screenshots together.

the Jasc Paint Shop Pro did it correctly. But I can't get it to run on Win 7. It works fine on XP. Maybe you can get a copy on Ebay for penny's and try it. Well maybe not pennys. I found a copy for $12.00 US.
