I'm not sure I understand what you're asking, but I'll take a shot.

No, SP1 does not cost any "more" than regular Vista. In fact, it will be released for free to all current Vista holders, and will be included in the new Vista discs sold. It just an update that plugs holes, fixes security and instability issues as well as other bugs.

Yes, it will be an update just like all Microsoft service packs.

It used to be (XP's SP1 and SP2, for example) that you could pay about $5 and have a CD shipped to you, but you can also download it yourself and/or get it via the normal Windows Update channels. In today's world, the only reason to buy a CD is if you are on dial-up.

If you want a disk, I know for XP SP2 you could order a disk for free from Microsoft.

I actually prefer having the disk, regardless of how I get it, FWIW.

I actually found getting the disk to be easier than downloading the SP2 every time i reinstalled (I was using my Dell reinstall disk and I couldn't figure out how to slipstream SP2 into it)

well you dont have to pay anything anymore. As soon as you buy a microsoft product you sold your soul to uncle Gates anyways. There isnt anything else he would want

on a side note i have never gotten an SP2 disk before it has always been either downloaded or a copy of xp with SP2 in it

Sounds like you have never installed a SP before....

A service pack is simply a collection of updates all in one package... So see it the same way you would installing an update from Windows Update... They are free and don't require you to loose any data or do any formats and etc. You just hit go and it gets updated...

Just relax though as Vista SP1 isn't due out for about 6 more months at the earliest... I'll post some info as soon as they make the thing available to MSDN subscribers.
