Last week, I had about 100gbs free on my harddrive. I check it right now and it says I have 70gbs free! I've only downloaded a few tv shows in that time..no where near 30gbs worth of stuff! The only thing I've done in this time is Download/Install/Restart my computer with a few Vista Updates..can I get that space back or what?

    Thanks..

You probably have recovery points turned on.

Not only that, but Vista also saves "Shadow Copies" of your work, even though you can only access those copies in Ultimate or Business :(

Alright thanks! I only have Vista Home Premium, so should I turn it off? And if so, how do I do that?

Yes, it takes up much of it.

But you can also try the Vista tweak thread that's floating around here somewhere.

Control Panel/System/Tasks Pane - System Protection/Uncheck the drive(s) you do not want restore points taken for/Apply.

You can also remove all but the most recent one there.

Your choice. It really depends upon whether you will ever actually use a restore point or not.

What is shadowcopy? I have Vista Business. Does it keep copies of all my word, excel, powerpoints, pdfs, and corel files somewhere?

Shadow Copy can be enabled/disabled at the volume level. If enabled, the actual copies can be accessed at the Folder/File level.

But just to clairfy, it only makes shadow copies of the files as you change (and I believe delete) them.

It really all comes down to a few choices:
    • Do you care if it does it?
    • Do you want to reclaim the space?
    • Do you want to reduce the overhead of doing it?
    • Do you think that you will ever use it?
    • Do you want to exert the effort to stop it?

Personally, I turned off Recovery Points (and thereby Shadow Copy) and Indexing, both at the volume level.
